“Come away with me” by Maggie Kim and Angie Kim
So, the girls and I have been just a little *wee* bit busy the last few months - something about moving cross country *again,* starting new job, starting new school, and a bunch of other crazy but fun and life-changing stuff. So, no new baby scenes from us, and maybe never again - childhood is like that - it travels at a pace faster than any of us grownups can really grok (except in stunned moments when looking at photos from only months prior -”Wow, everyone is growing up SO FAST.“).
But here’s where we still get to delight in our friends Angie and Maggie Kim’s new baby scenes. If you remember from an earlier post introducing this twin sister designer duo from Oda, these lovely women had their first kids within months of each other and have teamed up in yet another creative endeavor with their particular style of magic, fantasy, and amazing array of couture fabric remnants.
I like to think of these beautiful children being cocooned not just by the fabric of their mothers’ handiwork, but also by the imagination inspired by their love.
Here’s “Come Away with Me,” by Angie and Maggie Kim, starring Baby Indigo and Baby Bowie.
Another version of “Ode to Violet’s Circus,” by (the makers of Baby Indigo and Baby Bowie) Angie Kim and Maggie Kim of Oda. Baby Indigo juggles while balancing on a ball! Baby Bowie does daredevil highwire with his best conspirer, Fox! We can’t wait to see what other adventures these adorables get up to.
We’ve been busy. Oh so busy! But the girls and I are planning some babyscenes to kick around this summer.
In the meantime, while we stew in our creative juices, it’s with wonder and joy that we share with you a debut babyscene by our good friends Angie Kim and Maggie Kim of Oda, twin sisters who are also new mamas to Baby Indigo and Baby Bowie, respectively. When Angie and Maggie created this magical scene and titled it “Ode to Violet’s Circus,” I experienced this rich and lovely emotion - when your ideas, or art, or stories, inspire others to partake in a similar vein, it imbues whatever you’ve been doing with next-level meaning. It’s satisfying and boomerangs the inspiration right back.
I should add that somewhere in the mysterious workings of why-and-how-we-create, I’m sure Angie and Maggie’s exquisite work in fashion design have inspired me since I’ve known them. Their self-described “Tokyo Pop crossed with Edwardian extravagance” sensibility has always impressed me with (and set a high bar for) what I think of as creation with devotion.
You’re all in for a treat as the adorable cousins Indigo and Bowie make guest appearances on this babyscenes tumblr!
Two Years Ago Today
We moved from San Francisco to Brooklyn. We brought some books, but left many behind. And we secreted into Willow’s bindle a few bright yellows from the Meyer lemon tree in our backyard. Those two things we missed a lot in our past two years here on the East Coast. Lemon trees. And a backyard.
Somebunny, somewhere
We’re going to search for bunnies in the botanical garden this weekend, along with colorful eggs. So excited for the weather to finally feel like Spring! Last year, the girls found all except one of the bunnies in this tableau.
(Hint: there’s ten)
Happy Easter.
And the Race is On
Snow Flurries today, Hanami tomorrow
We’re taking one step closer to being true Brooklyners - lately we’ve been obsessively monitoring the Brooklyn Botanical Garden’s Cherry Blossom Map. As of today, no signs of early blooms yet (it was snowing this morning!).
Last year, this was a pre-walking Willow taking her friend Dogdor on a fantasy hanami, inspired by our first Sakura Matsuri at Brooklyn Botanical (which is now one of our favorites places in the *world.*) This year, she’ll be able to toddle and run with big sister Violet underneath all the glorious, blushing, blossomy clouds.
The Witching Hour
There’s been so much blue in the last few posts. Here’s one we did with a velvety black background and mini-marshmallow stars. For Halloween two years ago. It’s nowhere near Halloween now, but real magic knows all seasons.
For everyone who waits up until the witching hour to see just what will happen...
The Witching Hour.
The Trains of Your Mind
Ever wonder why a kid says what she says? Yes, we all do. We think, that is brilliant! Or, why didn’t I think of that before? Or, how on earth did you get on that train of thought?
Willow does an homage here to her sister Violet, who is our resident Queen of trains of thought. Violet actually tried to convert their toy NYC subway trains into rollerskates (with crazy disastrous consequences). Keeping the world a place where toy trains make perfectly reasonable roller skates is every child’s contribution to the world. Here’s to Spring (soon?) and Happy Monday!
Train(ing) skates. Keep them doggies rollin’!
Am I a baby, dreaming that I’m a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming that it’s a baby? Or a baby dreaming that it’s a butterfly who is dreaming that it’s a baby?
Superbaby
Her super power?
To make those who love her *believe.*
We all started out this way - fully capable of turning the stuff of air and light into dreams and feats. Children help us remember that again.
Yes, remember THAT as you strive to get through the week.
Superbaby: Able to leap tall buildings with a singular smile.
Aquatic Marvels, Part II
In which the sisters go swimming in the Sea of Mismatched Fish.
Everyone not only wonders why socks go missing into the maw of twilight laundry, but also, if these departed socks transform into something else when they reach “the other side.” We came up with a good theory that these socks become Mismatched Fish in their very own quixotic sea, so our little swimmers went diving just to check these interesting creatures out.
The report back was that the fish were “a little sad” to be so far away from their twin socks, but the “sea is a nice warm place to be.”
