more people need to understand that just because a certain take / opinion in discourse is generally mirrored or shared by terfs doesn’t inherently make that take / opinion “TERF rhetoric”. like that’s a complete misconceptualization of how things like ‘[x hate group] rhetoric’ and dogwhistling works.

hot take: the pr stunt to try and get everyone to call Mormons and Mormonism “saints” and “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints” in as many places as possible is an attempt to rebrand the church as well as to distance the groups of people for whom mormonism isn’t the main part of their identity (and who look at this and go “why tho”) from mainstream mormonism.

it’s a dogwhistle to those who wish to make mormonism exclusionary to a very particular group of people, and a cult tactic to build a stronger group identity through the exclusion of other identities a person may have. eta: in the past, these kinds of “revelations”/pr stunts have been done during times where the church was publicly under fire. with the protect lds children movement, sexual abuse case, and the overall decline of activity in the church, this gives something for believers to latch onto as showing a news source to be ‘untrustworthy’, because a lot of the literary rules put out by pr are most likely not going to be followed by people talking to a much larger audience, especially in articles where more than one religious group is going to be talked about.
