I swear, up until a few minutes before I took these pictures I would have told you I did a restore reroot a Steffie face Malibu Sunset PJ doll with bleach blonde hair. But once the Francie body came in that gave me a full set of them with their original hair. I had to look at them when I put Francie together. *And it was the Francie I did the restore reroot on. No wonder my brain hurts.
Who I do have scheduled for a restore reroot is a spare Barbie from that batch with a Casey face, and a regular PJ with her smiling face for my vintage heads on MtM girls. Forgot Barbie was Titian so that PJ will be getting a light silvery grey. The Casey (not Twiggy no eyelashes) face will be getting violet Monster High trimmings because she has to have short hair.
I do not do commissions what so ever so don't even ask. Go look up how much just the hair costs.
possible Avery Styles Jr. High reroot color combos, please vote for what you personally think would look best on her!! pls take into account her factory eye makeup (lavendar, pink, white with black liner)! thanks in advance, this would be my first total reroot ever.
Doll Reference:
Color Combos:
Auburn with thermal color changing hair as front highlights only to frame face (changes from lavender to platinum blonde). It sounds cute in theory but not sure how cute it would actually look... hair would be blonde most of the time (51* F color change)
2. Same idea as 1 (face-framing highlight) but with black base. Would even consider full head of highlights on black base!
3. Black Base/Color changing (pink) highlight(s). 81* F goes from pink to white.
4. "Cotton Candy Pink" blondeish with foxglove lavender highlight(s)
5. Platinum with foxglove lavendar streaks
6. Auburn/Platinum front highlights
7. Auburn/Cotton Candy Pink Blondish front highlights
Which color combo do you think would look best on Jr. High Avery Styles?
Anyone have some recommendations of places to buy doll hair that is a good price without being complete shit quality lol
Or more specifically any places I should avoid? Odds are I'm just gonna search and find some random shop on Etsy or maybe Aliexpress but the latter can be risky quality wise
Looking thru the rerooting stuff, assigning hair colors. White Monster cat in white, Sunset Malibu Barbie restored to blonde, Tropical Milo in camoflague green, Uneeda Wendy in oyster shell and snowflake. Got to decide what to do with the Blythe cap because she changed her mind.
I had this hunch once the dollplanet nylon arrived in this latest commission that it was probably what’s also known as toyokalon and available for fairly cheap if you can find the right place (aka a place not selling kanekalon or nylon). I gave away the last of my toyokalon so I’m not able to test that theory but I’m 90% sure. If the link above doesn’t work: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32839950645.html

I’ve done feel tests and temperature tests and it seems to be the same heat resistant ‘nylon’ fibre sold by dollplanet.
At 200°C this is what happens to different doll hair fibres:
Doll grade kanekalon (not pictured) starts frazzling at just above 100°C so use water a moment after it’s boiled to style it.
Saran starts frazzling at 125°C. 120°C is often the lowest setting on a temperature controlled hair iron.
The nylons that match my little pony (slightly thicker denier, more porous) and the slighly shinier nylons from major dollhair suppliers start to frazzle at 190°C
This other fibre (possibly toyokalon - dubbed heat resistant nylon by dollplanet so maybe let’s call it HRNylon for now) loses some shine at 200°C but is barely affected. It’s still about half the thickness of human kanekalon which can withstand 200°C no probs.
I placed my order a month ago and it arrived 35 days later. I ordered #15 hoping it would be an exact match to whisper and I think I was sent the wrong colour #14. You get 54g = 1.9oz and 80cm = 31 inches for $3.14 to $5 depending on the shop.
I put twistie ties for electronics in the hair before even removing it from the bag so to ensure less hair loss (snip the rubber bands they’re ready to break anyway)
I havn’t yet found the right keywords for this fibre on ebay other than thedollplanet store obviously =) and I think it’s a decent fibre if a little annoying to handle with the same drawbacks as nylon: curls when pulled on, tendancy to knot, slightly static - These are phone pics taken during my commission work with dollplanet HRNylon.
The drawback of getting the cheaper stuff would be that it doesn’t come with baggies, twistie ties and nice photos to show you the exact colour and of course the 30 to 60 day wait and possible communication errors with the seller.
Other than that, well it’s half the price minus $14 shipping to france so I obviously would rather wait... or order my preferred saran. But it’s another option for hair and it blends well with doll grade kanekalon even if the styling temperatures are wildly different.
Of course I’ve gone and ordered the green now. In case you had any doubts. =)
has anyone come up with a solution to soften hard vinyl heads that doesn’t involve just heat?
I’m thinking of taking on a commission for bratz pixiez again but they have heads far harder than integrity toys and it’s tedious work: 5 minutes heating for five minutes rooting time... and i’m wondering if there’s some other solution to make their scalps less hard to work with. I’ve considered an acetone soak but then that risks deforming the head, i’ve considered sanding the scalp with a dremel to be thinner but I don’t have any bait pixiez to find out if the vinyl is thick or just hard.
reborn doll creators stick a rice sock inside the head, these are 4cm with a tiny neck opening so that’s not going to be an option.
