Women belong to an ancient and rich literary tradition with roots in the Old Norse culture. The oral tradition in poetry can be traced to women's culture, particularly to such activities as healing and prophesying. The main poetic genres were visions and incantations, but there were also dreams, work songs, laments, and poems on healing. The most important remnants of the Old Icelandic oral tradition are the Eddic poems. This loose collection of poetry, composed before the eleventh century and preserved in a manuscript dated from c. 1270, is characterized by fantastic stories of mythological figures, supernatural events, and a heroic world. (Edda means great-grandmother and can etymologically be related to óþr, or ode.) Many of the poems abound in female experiences such as giving birth, embroidering, doing laundry. They describe feelings of love, betrayal, mourning, and abandonment. Some are women's monologues; others, dialogues between women. In Sigurdrífumál (The Monologue of Sigurdrifa), a woman is teaching a man healing verses.
