The Transition to University
What does moving away for university mean?
It means you’re leaving the group of friends you grew up with. It means you’re saying bye to mum’s delicious home cooked meals. It means you’re playing for the last time in your high school band. It means you’re saying good-bye to your hockey team. It means there are no school bells, no lunch times, no little hug sessions between switching classes, and no spoon-feeding from your teachers.
The boy/girl you thought you loved in high school, now loves someone else. That group of girls who used to gossip about you in high school, will no longer matter. The people your mom told you to stay away from, you wish you did. The subject you once hated, now becomes your favourite. The type of people you thought you wouldn’t get along with, are now considered family. So many changes, in such little time.
This is first year. Getting readying for early morning lectures with little to no sleep. Working for hours on projects and only getting a C. Running back and forth from the library to your dorm room, only to realize you haven’t eaten all day. Making a group of friends out of strangers, and making strangers out of old friends. Trying things, you’ve never tried. Laughing with your new floormates all night.
First year is the most bittersweet experience. It’s the first step to reality. You realize your parents won’t always be there to cook or drive you. You realize your “bestie” for many years has moved on, and found a new group of friends. You realize that sometimes you can’t help your bad grades. You realize that your mental health is worse than ever, but most of all, you realize it will always work out at the end.
This is a year for changes, self-realization, and a fresh new start. It’s a time to put your old self behind, and improve for the future. It’s a chance for you to realize a few C’s won’t kill you, and a few A’s doesn’t mean you can slack off. High school was great while it lasted, but it’s time to put the silly drama away and step into reality. Get some sleep, study hard, make good friends, explore around, and take care of yourself.
Cheers to first year!
