"Survival tip: no one likes a smart mouth." "Except you," Neil reminded him.
Reading this book was the best thing i could've ever done in my life. You don't understand, andreil is the only thing keeping me alive right now i LOVE them.
Also!!!! oh my god I'm finally gonna read sunshine court!!!!!!
Obsessed with how Nora wrote Neil a beautiful love story where his demisexuality is something that his partner loves about him and which brings both of them joy.
Neil being demisexual is literally perfect for Andrew. When they first meet, Neil "not swinging" gives Andrew assurance that Neil won't be sexually interested, which allows Andrew to feel safe enough to eventually become close to Neil. I think that Andrew's fear of being the object of sexual attention is partly why he exclusively spends time with people who won't develop sexual desire towards him (the monsters: his relatives + a straight dude; and Renee, from whom he extracts the reassurance that "I don't kiss heathens").
Then, once Andrew gets close to Neil and starts developing feelings for him, Andrew ALSO gets the reassurance that Neil actually does swing. For him, specifically. And Neil's swinging is nothing to do with the physical features of Andrew's body or with Andrew being available and willing. Instead, Neil values and loves the parts of him that Andrew himself has already offered Neil. This couldn't be more perfect for Andrew! Neil is a pipedream. A man for whom loving and respecting Andrew as a person is a precondition for even wanting to touch; a man who won't ever push Andrew to cross a boundary, because his own desires are completely enmeshed with his love for Andrew. Andrew has won the lottery of life.
And for Neil, too, his demisexuality is overwhelmingly a positive thing. It means that Neil doesn't have his head turned when it would have been dangerous for him. Instead he falls for a man who makes him feel safe and cared for. In fact, Neil himself acknowledges this when he first decides to kiss Andrew, reasoning that "the idea of Andrew was so intertwined with the idea of Neil's safety that this too was a means of self-preservation". Also, once Neil recognises what he feels for Andrew, he never has reason to doubt it. Neil doesn't get casual crushes, so he knows that what he feels is The Real Deal.
Anyway, this is beautiful to me. Just the fact that aftg has a demisexual protagonist who finds love is amazing, but then that Nora also gives him someone who doesn't treat Neil's demisexuality as a burden or an obstacle or something to tolerate... that she writes his demisexuality as foundational for the main romance of the books, as fantastic for both Neil and for the man that he loves... infinite applause.
I never want to see an Aftg show series Iām so sorry I just know theyād fuck it up and I canāt have that š
Oh, I know that I can't live without you
But this world will keep turning if you do
"Another bit of unexpected honesty"
Andrew and Neil share a single wardrobe. at first, Andrew reaches only for his own clothes out of habit, never even realizing he's doing it. It takes months of sharing the same shelves before the line between mine and yours begins to blur. Neil, on the other hand, adapts from the very beginning. he has no problem stealing Andrew's clothes because he's never paid much attention to what he wears in the first place. whether something belongs to him or not has never mattered all that much. after his evening shower, Neil flops onto the bed beside Andrew, face-first onto the mattress. he's wearing an old pair of shorts that only became "old" because Andrew finally insisted that "it's embarrassing to keep wearing that rag outside," along with one of Andrew's t-shirts that Neil stole months ago. by now it's become a routine: the moment it's washed, Neil claims it before Andrew even has a chance to notice it sitting in the clean laundry. It goes straight from the dryer onto Neil's back. curious, Andrew hooks a finger beneath the waistband of Neil's shorts and tugs them down just enough to glance underneath, letting out a quiet hum when he finds himself looking at his own boxers. "You're stretching out my underwear." Neil snorts. "You could always stop wearing any" he drapes an arm across Andrew's stomach and nuzzles into the warm spot over his heart before tilting his head up, those impossibly blue eyes meeting Andrew's steady brown ones. Andrew raises an eyebrow, waiting. without saying a word, Neil throws one leg over Andrew's, settling into what is apparently the perfect position. "You're stretching out my t-shirts,". Andrew counters: "You can't stretch out something that already fit you like a damn dress.ā. Neil only huffs. Andrew knows full well that Neil knows that he [Andrew] likes to feel Neil's scent. even after living together long enough for all their clothes to carry the same familiar scent, Neil himself still smells unmistakably like Neil. there's warmth to it, something faintly reminiscent of cheap cologne mixed with freshly laundered cotton, lingering in the fabric of what used to be Andrew's old shirt. but the greatest trace of that scent isn't trapped in a piece of clothing. It's tucked into the warm skin just behind Neil's ear. every night before falling asleep, Andrew presses his nose there, quietly breathing in the achingly familiar scent of the person beside him. It's something tangible, something steady-something that, for the first time in his life, feels like home.

what the fuck do you know about awkward moments? a blowjob in the shower? first time jerking off against the wall? no, Itās Andrew kissing Neil without closing his eyes, and Neil, so caught off guard by that first kiss that he keeps his own eyes open for a few bewildered seconds. so theyāre just staring at each other from inches away in the middle of a kiss?? no, absolutely not. that has to be the single most ridiculous thing that couldāve happened.
Do you think Andrew had to teach him to keep his eyes closed by pulling on his eyelids (ignoring how hypocritical that is).
I donāt think Neil picks up Andrewās habit of keeping his eyes open during a kiss for more than those first few startled seconds. once the surprise wears off, his eyes stay closed for the rest of it. Neil is simply hopelessly addicted to Andrew and to kissing him. he throws himself into every kiss so completely that, even after itās over, his eyes remain closed for another few moments, as though heās still lost somewhere inside it.
