😻Dong Mae😻
gu dongmae and kudo hina deserved better
i just finished watching mr. sunshine, if you haven’t, please don’t read this. major spoilers
i am so angry and upset and i'm crying because i hate everyone. EVERY SINGLE ONE PERSON IN THE SHOW. THE ONLY QUEEN WHO MATTERED TO ME WAS HINA. SHE DESERVED THE WORLD. SHE DESERVED TO BE LOVED AND WE ALL WERE ROBBED OF IT.
I WAITED FOR 700 YEARS FOR DONGMAE TO GET HIS SHIT TOGETHER. FOR THE WRITING TO GET BETTER FOR HIM BUT HE REMAINED THE MAN WITH NO DIGNITY (WHEN IT COMES TO LOVE) AND A MAN WITH NO SELF RESPECT. FROM THE START TILL THE END HE WASTED ALL HIS BREATH ON A WOMAN WHO NEVER WANTED HIM
dongmae & hina had everything EVERYTHING trust, respect, love (if you may) but idk why the writing for their them was so bad. they deserved each other. she loved him so much and it showed. i always felt like he loved her too but then... he was so stuck up with the main lead. they never let him have love. MY MAN DESERVED EVERYTHING. IHATEIT
even by the end of the show, they show us just how much hina means to him and for him to be just die thinking of the 1st lead. like, CAN WRITERS STOP WITH THIS OBSESSION OF THE 1ST LEAD.
A rainy day
The sight of the Musin Society chief seated at the table, his legs wide open, in his full “I’m a scary Japanese man” attire was something. Tea was waiting for him in a beautiful British cup just in front of him. It looked like the man was not even considering the cup. Hui Seong was delighted by the sight. He arched an eyebrow while tilting his head and smiled.
“I enjoy seeing you there” he said, knowing well enough how annoyed that would made Dong Mae.
“I’ll enjoy seeing you with some swords through your body, sir” replied Dong Mae, smiling too.
How hurtful of him. Hui Seong made sure to exaggerate the gesture of him being hurt by his words while putting his hand on his heart and throwing his body back on the chair he was on. Dong Mae was not in the mood for Hui Seong’s games. But when was he ever?
With that thought on his mind, Hui Seong decided that he would make Dong Mae drink that damn cup of English tea.
“Let’s drink” he said, “to our life!” he continued while raising his cup in the direction of Dong Mae, a toast of sort.
“Yours won’t be long if you keep talking, sir.”
Hui Seong sighed.
“My dear friend” he begun while Dong Mae almost snorted, “How are we supposed to wait for our third guest if we can’t even entertain ourselves with small talks”
Dong Mae didn’t reply. He just crossed his arms and stared a bit more harshly at Hui Seong, with half a smile on his face.
“Look around us” Hui Seong tried, “Everyone’s chatting and talking about small things while drinking tea or playing cards”
Well, that was true, almost all the time in that main hall of the Glory Hotel. But now, not so strangely, everyone was a bit more quiet than usual. You could even hear the rain falling outside. All eyes and ears were focused on the man who wasn’t drinking his tea.
“I’m sorry sir, but I do not think it would be wise to talk about how loud the raindrops are with someone who will eventually have my sword planted in his chest” replied Dong Mae
That made Hui Seong’s smile widen. “Then what do you suggest?”
Dong Mae got up and said “I’m quite sure the man we’re waiting for is otherwise occupied with that fiancée of yours. Quite another way to go through your chest don’t you think sir?”
Well then, Hui Seong would drink all the tea that was left behind if this was how Dong Mae was behaving. Anyone would have ruled that answer as cheating. Quite a sad turn of events if he was honest with himself. What was he going to do with his long boring afternoon now? How rude of Eugene to not join their tea party. Now he wouldn’t even have the pleasure to see Dong Mae drink tea in an English cup.
Hui Seong got up and put a hand on Dong Mae’s shoulder when the man was at the door. The man turned his head slowly and looked at Hui Seong’s hand as if he could make the member burn with his sight. Hui Seong knew he was pushing his luck, but instead of removing his hand, he decided to add “My friend, you were not thinking of going out without paying your delicious tea”. Dong Mae’s sight finally moved from Hui Seong’s hand to Hui Seong’s head. It was murderous.
Hui Seong lifted both of his hand in a surrender move “or they can put in on my tab” he said smiling.
Dong Mae finally moved again, quite slowly, but the way he pushed the entrance door was a bit too strong. Hui Seong thought about what to do. Staying in his hotel room all afternoon, waiting for the rain to stop, and sigh every minute or so was one way of spending the remaining hours of the day. This didn’t sound really pleasant. But at least he wouldn’t get wet. Or he could follow Dong Mae. Get threaten to get killed multiple times. Enjoy the sight of the man being frustrated by the fact he couldn’t actually kill Hui Seong every time he opened his mouth. That seemed like a fun and entertaining afternoon. He still took an umbrella on his way out in the umbrella pot next to the door. Dong Mae voicing death threats was a thing quite amusing. Ruining his costume with rain was quite a less amusing thought.
“WAIT FOR ME GOOD FRIEND” he yelled to Dong Mae to be heard through the heavy rain falling on the ground.
Dong Mae didn’t even stop, but Hui Seong saw that his movements slowed down for a second. The man didn’t even bother taking anything to protect himself of the rain. He was already being drenched. Hui Seong wondered if he didn’t care about the rain, or if he wanted to make it seems like even rain couldn’t bother him. Probably the later, since Hui Seong could already see the tall man’s hair sticking to his nape. And no one this planet could be mad enough to enjoy that sensation.
Hui Seong walked in a fast pace to keep up with Dong Mae’s long legs and his will to get out of Hui Seong’s voice reach. It was a hard task because puddles were everywhere in his path. Hui Seong liked his shoes, very much so.
“Would you want to share my umbrella dear friend?” asked Hui Seong
“I wouldn’t want you to end up drowning yourself in the rain. Sir.” Answered Dong Mae, walking even faster.
They walked in silence for some minutes, Hui Seong too focused on walking a very bizarre way to avoid dirtying his shoes with mud or soaking them in rainwater while trying to follow Dong Mae at the right pace. They encountered few people on their way to wherever Dong Mae was going, running to arrive at their destination as fast as they could, protecting their head with clothes. They had arrived in the Japanese district of the town when Hui Seong finally asked, “Where are we going on this beautiful afternoon?”
That’s when Dong Mae had enough apparently, because before Hui Seong could realize what was happening, he took Hui Seong’s wrist and swing his poor body on some house that was on the side of the road they were currently on. Hui Seong’s umbrella was on the floor. In the mud. Hui Seong would have to clean that later. Or perhaps he could ask some maid at the hotel to do it for him. What an inconvenient day it was. Hui Seong finally focused on the man that was quite close to him now, when he spoke : “Sir, I’ll be sorry to find you dead tomorrow because you would see or hear something that you shouldn’t” He wasn’t looking very sorry. He continued “But if you keep on following me, I’ll guarantee you I’ll be the first one to bring flowers to your grave tomorrow morning”. He smiled.
This whole situation was amusing. Dong Mae looked like he just bathed in a lake with all his clothes on. Exhaling some hot breath through his mouth, because even though his attitude claimed that he was a tall scary man, he was still human and affected by the coldness of the water running on every part of his body. The air was not yet very warm enough at the beginning of this year’s spring. They were under a roof, but still, some drop pearled at the end of the man's eyelashes. Hui Seong liked that. And he smiled too. And Dong Mae stopped. Dong Mae didn’t understand. Hui Seong did. Rain was nice. Some glorious sights he had on this day.
Perhaps because of the rain. Perhaps because of Dong Mae throwing him unexpectedly on a wall. Perhaps because when he looked at Dong Mae, and Dong Mae looked at him, something ignited deep on his being. Or perhaps someone had spiked his tea earlier. Perhaps because of other reasons, Hui Seong asked “You know, I’ll think our friendship could even be nicer”
Dong Mae didn’t reply. He was curious. And that made Hui Seong even more adrenaline filled with “I could help you dry faster, for whatever meeting you’re waited for” he smiled, taking a small step towards Dong Mae who didn’t budge. His breathing was still even as he looked in Hui Seong eyes. He was thinking. Hui Seong didn’t move either, waiting for Dong Mae to decide what to do. Kill him with his sword or inviting him in his chambers. Hui Seong would be a bit disappointed if he chooses the first option.
After some seconds Dong Mae finally moved. He leaned down and picked up Hui Seong’s umbrella “I think, that your umbrella need to dry too, sir” he smiled, the same way he did when he threatened him, but perhaps his eyes were less murderous and more interested than before. Or it was Hui Seong’s imagination. He was fine with it either way. Dong Mae started to walk away slowly, with Hui Seong Umbrella balanced on his shoulder, and Hui Seong took that as the answer he needed. Well, compromise he should make. Loosing one (very nice) suit was not the worse sacrifice he could make to spend an incredibly surprising afternoon with his new friend. As he followed Dong Mae, he didn’t even look on the ground to avoid walking on mud.
Hui Seong opened his mouth to express how happy he was by the unexpected turn of events were when Dong Mae said “I’ll have you know sir, that if you open your mouth before we’re both dry and clothed, I’ll be delighted to shove my sword through your mouth.”
I’ve been obsessed with this couple for a bit, and made this. I wish these two had been given a happy ending with each other ㅠㅠ
If you haven’t watched Mr. Sunshine, you should definitely watch it. It’s available on Netflix with subtitles. As you can tell, I was definitely wanting the second leads to be a couple.

---- Some nights, he lay awake, catching Eugene’s faint murmurs. As silence settled, he realized it wasn’t prayer. It was Eugene, lost in himself.
The thought burned Dong-mae’s cheeks. Even past his prime, Eugene was all strength—vital, unyielding. Dong-mae cursed his own body, worn from years of neglect and opium’s grip. The farmer’s life had restored some vigor, but beside Eugene, he felt small.
That slick sound across the room made him swallow hard. Low grunts twisted his gut, and he turned away, desperate to block the images blooming—Eugene’s chest rising with breath, his flushed skin, the heat.
A single groan, raw and ragged, haunted him. His dreams hadn’t been the same since.
