Researchers Discover Prehistoric Obsidian and Bronze Ax in Jayapura

Researchers in Papua have discovered obsidian and bronze artifacts from two different locations in Jayapura regency. According to Hari Suroto, of the Papua Archaeological Center, after the decline of the Lapita trading network from the island of Manus  New Britain, about 2500 years ago in the Pacific, there was concrete evidence of transactions between Southeast Asia and Papua. "Bronze axes were a commodity of trade. Bronze axes found in Lake Sentani were produced in Dongson, today in the northern part of Vietnam, around 2400 to 2100 years ago," he explained.  "These obsidian fragments are produced through pruning of core stones in the process of making tools ," Hari explained. According to Hari, Obsidian is the main commodity traded by people of the Lapita culture. The Lapita people are from Manus Island, New Britain, north of Papua New Guinea. Geologically, said Hari, the obsidian findings at the Yomokho site prove that during prehistoric times, there had been contact between human inhabitants of Lake Sentani and those outside. Obsidian found on the Yomokho site, shows that in prehistoric times the Lake Sentani area became part of the Lapita trade network. This is supported by the forests around Lake Sentani and the Cycloops mountains, which produce a distinctive commodity in the form of the Bird of Paradise, to be exchanged with obsidian- obsidian from New Britain. "The culture of Lapita was so advanced that it enabled the Lapita people to be able to travel far and wide to reach islands in the Pacific; to the northern coast of Papua and islands off the coast of Papua," Hari said.

Selamat malam teman, pada waktu Festival Kataloka bulan lalu, kami sempat berkunjung ke Kataloka dan melihat salah satu benda kuno yaitu Nekara Dong Son Tipe Heger I, menurut hasil wawancara kami dengan salah satu Arkeolog Balar Maluku, Marlon Ririmasse . "Nekara di Kataloka adalah satu dari tiga belas spesimen nekara dongson yang pernah ditemukan di Maluku. Objek ini adalah produk masa logam di akhir era prasejarah. Sentra produksi benda benda perunggu ini terletak di bagian utara vietnam saat ini. Maluku merupakan rumah bagi 13 nekara dongson tipe heger 1. Dan menjadi wilayah dengan jumlah nekara dongson terbanyak sesudah Pulau Jawa yang memiliki 18 spesimen. Selain di kataloka, nekara dongson tipe heger 1 juga tercatat pernah ditemukan di pulau buru, kei, luang, dan beberapa pulau lain. Sumber sejarah pertama yang menyebut mengenai nekara berasal dari tulisan Rumphius di abad ke 17 yang menyebutkan mengenai nekara di pulau Serua. Rumphius juga sempat mengirimkan beberapa spesimen objek ini ke eropa. Di kei, spesimen nekara dong son dapat ditemukan di desa vaan dan madwair, sekaligus menjadi penanda hubungan persaudaraan kedua desa. di Tanimbar spesimen nekara ini dapat dilihat di desa Arui Das. Salah satu nekara asal Kei kini disimpan sebagai koleksi prasejarah di museum nasional Jakarta. Keberadaan himpunan nekara ini yang berusia sekitar 2.500 tahun adalah penanda, peran strategis kepulauan maluku dalam jaringan perdagangan purba dengan wilayah barat nusantara hingga asia daratan.
