[2:48 pm]— “... and the little bird flew high in the sky. Do you know what he found?” You leaned in closer to the group of toddlers sitting on the floor, their little eyes wide and bright as you told them a story you made up on the spot. “They found...” You began in a hushed tone. “... a rainbow!”
“But you didn’t say that it rained,” one little girl said. She had a pout on her face that made her oh so adorable, and the pig tails sprouting out of her head only completed the look. “Rainbows only come out when it rains. That’s what my brother said.”
You tapped your finger on your chin, humming as you pretended to recall what you said. “You’re right!” you exclaimed after a moment. “I forgot to mention the rain. Silly me.” You offered the girl a smile, and she returned the gesture, pleased to be praised for her intelligence.
Your coworker, Chaewon, peeked her head out of the back room where all the snacks and extra toys were located. “The parents are here,” she said.
“You heard Miss Chaewon, friends!” You clapped your hands together as the toddlers scrambled to their feet. “It’s time to go home!”
You helped the children gather their bags and toys before walking them out to the front of the daycare. The little girl who had corrected your rainbow story held your hand tightly, practically dragging you to a young man who looked to be a few years older than you with a bright smile on her face.
“Doie!” she exclaimed. “Miss Y/N said I’m smart!”
“Well of course you are, squirt.” He gazed fondly at the girl, bringing his hand up to ruffle her hair. “I tell you that everyday.”
“This is different!” the little girl insisted. “Miss Y/N is actually smart.”
“Oh. Is she?” The twinkle of amusement in his eyes was not lost to you as he brought his gaze to meet yours. “I’m Doyoung,” he said, extending his hand.
“Y/N,” you supplied, even though he already knew it, and shook his hand.
“It was nice meeting you, Y/N. I’ll take her off your hands now. Hopefully, I’ll see you around.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow!” You waved at the little girl, and then to Doyoung.
He only winked in response, not missing the way your cheeks heated up. And then he was gone with your favorite toddler in tow.
