[5:45 am]— engineer!Doyoung wiped the sweat off his brow, pushing himself to his full height. He had been on his knees, crawling around under the newest spaceship prototype our team had to offer. His eyes were dark, calculating, and I knew not to open my mouth when he looked like that. That look could only mean one thing: something was wrong.
“Who assembled this engine?” he asked the room of tired engineers. We had been dragged out of our bunks only thirty minutes before and he was the only one who seemed to be awake enough to work.
A man stepped forward, his eyebags and bedhead evident. “I did, sir.”
“We turn the damn thing on and the engine explodes.” Doyoung kicked the underside of the ship and I took a step back. “Who authorized you to be on this team?”
“Taeyong, sir,” the man said, looking as if he wanted to crawl into himself.
Doyoung chuckled humorlessly. “And I thought Taeyong had some brains on him.” His voice turned cold. “Get the hell out of my workshop.”
The poor engineer didn’t need to be told twice, practically running out of the room with all the strength he could muster. Once the door closed, Doyoung turned to the rest of us. “I need a working engine by tonight. If you fail, humanity dies. Get to work.”
We hurried to our stations, putting our heads together like a football team to brainstorm our options, but our ideas were wearing thin. We had been doing this routine for months now and we seemed further from a break through than we did the day before. No one had slept more than a wink, running off of fear and caffeine, and it was a wonder that our bodies didn’t give out like the machines we were paid to make.
Doyoung went from station to station, joining the brainstorm before butting out and joining another. The end of the world as we knew it was coming and he still held us all on a leash, as if extreme discipline would keep us alive. Maybe it would.
Finally, a girl from a station across the room said, “I think we have an idea.”
We turned to face her, a room of brilliantly exhausted engineers with sparkles in their eyes waiting for instruction, waiting for someone to tell our bodily machines how to function. She looked nervous, cleared her throat, then said, “Only if Doyoung approves of it, of course.”
Doyoung didn’t look impressed. “Go on.”
The girl gave us a quick run through of her team’s idea, which seemed to be the same as the last idea we had come up with, but Doyoung gave a nod at the end of it, looked us each in the eye and said, “Maybe we will save humanity after all.” Then, he clapped his hands, all hints of optimism gone. “Now, get to work.”
summary: Dongyoung didn't know a person could be wiped of memories as fast as a pile of pictures can be burnt.
Orange rays of the setting sun hid behind the streets and buildings, soft shadows painted the paths. The sun glared at Doyoung through the window he sat beside, but not harshly enough to pry his eyes away. However, a light snap and hum of rolling film made him sighed.
Across the small table from him sat a girl. Her smile was small but warm as she took the picture the camera spat out and waved it quickly, anxious to see the final product.
"You know...you don't need to take a picture every time we go out." Doyoung murmured but the girl's smile didnt to faulter at his words, simply looking up to meet his eyes before putting the picture and camera aside.
"I know but...I can't help it, you always look so perfect." She said, reaching out for a mug to warm her cold, winter-bitten hands.
"Well, enjoy it while you still have me." Dongyoung said leaning back in his chair, a smug smile on his lips as he took a sip of his own coffee.
The girl's smile dropped slightly as she looked down at her hands, fiddling with the handle of the mug "I know, I cherish every minute I have with you."
"You should be cherishing every second of it."
The girl's eyes shot up time as Doyoung tisked playfully, making the girl scoff out a light laugh.
"Okay okay, frorgive me. From now on i’ll appriacate every second I spend in your great precents."
"Only if you hurry up and choose a cake for us to share." He replied smoothly, smiling as the girl's eyes widen and her cute little hand quickly reach out for the small cake menu.
Through the window, the sun showered a warm filter over the girl. His eyes adored every freckle, every memrmer of her lips, her cute noes that was slightly red from the cold. He felt as though he were watching her through a camera. He wanted to remember- the perfect softness of her hair, the way she burrued her chin into the wool of the scarf -that looked oddly like his missing one- wrapped around her neck .
Though this was how she looked every day, it took his breath away. He wanted to record the moment in his mind and keept it there to watch whenever he pleased.
"Yeongiee~ chocolate cake please."
Doyeong blinked, his cheeks heating up slightly despite the nip of cool air.
"Just chocolate?" He asked and the girl nodded with a smile. A smile which Doyoung couldn't help but return softly.
The warm air from the heater toasted his woolen clothed feet, and the warm fluffy blanket did the same for his body laid across the couch. The heater sat in the corner of the small room hummed mindlessly and shooed off the winter air that tapped at the widow.
Doyoung rested silently, his eyes closed and his breathing ginger.
But snap and roll of film made his eyes twitch.
"Doyoungiie my handsome boy, I love you."
At the soft voice that brought him from his sleep,Doyoung went to open his eyes and whine to the girl for waking him- untill a familiar yet foreign sensation met his skin.
She was so close for those few seconds that he could smell the sweet honey shampoo that clung to her hair and sweater. The soft warm lips that pressed against his cheek sent tingles through his body and sent a rush of unwanted heat to his face. His trembling lips struggled to stay straight in his ‘sleep’ till he felt the lips leave his cheek.
Not wanting to face the embarrassment of if the girl were to realsed he was awake, Doyoung stayed silent, slowing down his breathing as his body relaxed again quickly. He didn't let himself flinch as his arm was lifted, his trembling eyes struggling to stay closed. He felt the small space beside him dip slightly as the girl laid down under the blanket that was now over the two and placed his arm down over her. As he heard the girl's soft whisper and her breathing slow down, he slowly cracked one eye open before the other.
the small smilehe had been restraining finally appeared acorss his lips as he wrapped his arm tighter around the sleeping girl, pulling her closer to him.
"I love you too." he whispered and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead before closing his eyes.
Falling asleep in the warm apartment, under the warm blankets and a warm feeling in his chest. He has no way to describe the tingle that was left of his cheek.
"Please! Wait!"
Rain poured from the grey sky as if a storm were on its way.
The pavement ground was coated in puddles of the water that mirrored back each shoe that trudged though it. Umbrellas littered the air as people walked home in the gloomy weather; anyone taller than the crowd would only see a flock of material.
Dongyoung shoved the people aside as rain pelted down mercilessly upon him, chasing after the figure that grew smaller in the crowd.
"Wait!"
Following after a fading sillohet of the girl who had left the cafe in a calm storm, Dongyoung called her name. He wasn't sure whether she couldn't hear him or if this really was the end.
How could he have been so stupid?
Finally, as the crowd became thinner, the man had finally reached for the girl's arm with one more call of her name.
As if time around them had stopped, Dongyoung spun her around to face him, seeing her eyes and cheeks were damp despite the umbrella that had to manage to protect the rest of her from the rain.
Her hair looked as soft as any other winter day, the coat that was wrapped around her smaller body and that familiar scarf-
"What do you want?" She sniffed, wiping the corner of her red and sensitive eyes.
The man could only stare as the rain continued to soak through to his bones.
"I..."
was all he could murmur.
Suddenly, the girl threw his grasp from her arm and with a soft scoff, turned. Falling to his knees, the puddles soaked though his jeans and his hands dangled by his side, his helplessly eyes watching as she walked away with the umbrella over her head.
"No, please."
He knew that if she turned her head back, maybe he could have her back in his arms and out of the rain again one day. But if she didn't, It was the end.
As he heard the soft splashes of water walking away him, his eyes fell shut. The slashes faded away and his shoulders slouched. He was left in the rain, in a puddle on his knees. When he felt his face heat up and a noise leave his throat, he knew that it was no longer only the rain pouring down his face but a mix of tears. They were salty and bitter as they dropped from his chin, falling into the puddle below him.
He lost her.
Opening his eyes as another sob left his lips, he stared into the puddle bellow him. The ripples created from the rain and his tears distorted the puddle’s reflection, a blury image of his sorry sight. However, the movement of a disoriented figure in the reflection caught his attention, he looked up.
"Doyougiee" her voice hiccuped through each syllable.
"I-I...I-I'll do whatever you want I-" His hands left the cold pavement to take her hand in both of his, "I love you."
Dongyoung looked at this hands, lips quivering, eyes shaking.the uncomfortable feeling of his hair stuck to his forehead and clothes that stuck to his skin washed the dignity of a drowned rat through him for a second. But as he reopened his eyes to stare at their hands he realised he didn't care and tightened his grip in desperation.
He felt the hesitant and timid squeeze of her hand and his eyes blinked open, looking up with a single ray of hope shining over him.
a snap and roll of film sounded like no surprise to him.
Doyoung murmured her name before he saw the camera and photo drop to the pavment, the girl following soon after.
"Wha-" his body was enveloped in warmth as she threw herself onto him, her arms wrapped tightly around his neck as loud sobs filled his ears.
He looked at the umbrella in front of them, lying abandoned on the ground beside the camera and photo in shallow conjuction of puddles with rain pouring onto them.
Dongyoung felt his chest tighten and more tears prick the corners his eyes, his arms moving to wrap around the girl tightly.
"I love you too, Doyoung."
"Is that the last of them?" Dongyoung put the cardboard box down next to the others.
"Yep! That's the last one! Now..." the girl looked around at all the boxes "We just have to unpack."
Doyoung felt a groan rumbling in his throat but refused to let it come out as he saw the girl readily open a box. She moved quickly, a thin layer of sweat on her forehead as she moved the heavy box to the small kitchen..
It had been the whole day that the two spent moving all their belongings into the new apartment. The essential furniture had been moved in prior, much to their relief as the sun began to hide away agin for the day.
Doyoung pulled a lamp from the box and placed it on top a cabinet he had manage to shove into a somewhat suitable corner and pushed the empty box towards another empty pile of boxes.
"Are you still unpacking the bathroom stuff?" Doyoung called as he dabbed the sweat from his face with a hand towel. When he received no reply, he paced towards the bedroom.
"Hey-" stopping mid-sentence, he shut his mouth when his eyes fell on the girl, passed out on the bed.
Doyoung smiled and softly shut the door, heading back to living room.As quickly as possible, Doyoung unpacked small and lightweight boxes to ensure he didn't wake up his girlfriend.
"Cushion, Plush, book-" he placed the items in similar groups of items which were from a box which the girl had just scribbled her name on.
"Plush-huh...what's this...?" Dongyoung picked up a pink box that was in between the teddies placed in some sort of attempt to protect the neat looking box. On the lid, the words "memories" were nearly printed across, making the man curious. Opening the lid Doyoung gaped at the contence. the door behind him opened.
"Dongyoung? I'm so sorry I fell asleep- what are you doing?!"
Quickly the girl ran over; snatching the pink box from the man's possession as he stared at the three of the polaroid pictures in his hand.
"What is this box about...?" Dongyoung's voice came out as a whisper, stating at the three pictures of himself for a second longer before looking up at the girl.
"I-I didn't know you kept them.." he murmured and the girl looked down, fiddling with the box delicatly.
"Of course I do,"
There was a silence that filled the box clustered living room, lingering for a minute or so before he spoke.
"Why?"
The girl looked at him, hesitantly and unsure of his reaction.
"W-what..?"
"Why do you keep them?"
The girl fidgeted "because you're so pretty all the-"
But she was cut off as Dongyoung shook his head, a deep sensirety welling up in his eyes. "Come on. Tell me"
Dongyoung quietly watched as the girl released a deflated sigh.
"I don't want to forget you. Ever."
Dongyoung observed as she shifted her eyes away, as if she had expected to be laughed at.
"You have a memory for that, you don't need to take all these pictures....you won't wake up and forget me."
He reasoned but the girl shook her head, clutching the box tightly in her arms as she avoided his gaze.
"That's not true, you can't be sure of that. Anything can happen Doyoung..." she said before she finally met his eyes.
"...anything"
The smell of rain intoxicated the couple as Dongyoung swung his and the cheery girl's entwined hands. The street lights lit their path as he held the umbrella above them, humming softly.
The road beside them was quiet. Considering the time of the morning and the heavy rain it really wasn't a surprise either. When a car did come around the corner, the squeaking of the windscreen wipers, the bright head lights, the slashing of water against the tires and the loud engine made its’s precentce quickly known to them.
But the road was quite when Dongyoung decided he wanted to dance. He had spun his foot slightly surprising the girl who laughed but complied with his sudden movements. He held both of her hands, the left of the entwined fingers holding the umbrella dangerously above them.
Their feet slid easily across the wet pavement and they atempted to humm in rhythm to their movements. Giggling each time one of them nearly slipped across the pavment, only to be saved by the other.
"I didn't know you were such a good dancer, Dogyoungiie~"
"Neither you."
But with fake music their timing had some fault. As they both turned in diffrent directions their feet caught up making they stumbled bac onto the road.
Regaining their posture, the two laughed lightly and agreed to walk normatl for the rest of the trip home. but the loud screeching of tires suddenly filled their ears and two headlines blinded them.
Dooung tried to pul her back to the path.
But he wasnt fast enough.
The sirens rung in his ears just as the beeping did. Haunting him in his sleep, he could hear the screeching of the tires and the force of the impact.
He could hear it all and it ached.
Maybe If he had been quicker none of this would have happened.
"Doyoung."
An unfamiliar voice called to him with a painfull softness.
Flickering his eyes open, the voice was paired with an unfamiliar, soft face. Her eyes were rimmed with red and tears dribbled down her soft, red stained cheeks. She shook her head in disbelief and her face was twisted in pain.
Her delicate hand covered over her mouth and pink tinted lips in an attempt to hold in the whimpers that accompanied her tears. Somewhere inside him, Dongyoung felt a sting in his heart at the sight of pain on the pretty girl's face. she looked as if she were in pain, physically harmed by the confused expression on Doyoung’s face when he looked over the few pictures the girl had handed him minutes before. With a wave of context he didn't understand, his eyes fell to the pink box in her hands that the pictures had come from before she left the seat beside the hospital bed he layed in, leaving him confused. His heart stung, calling for her to return, but
As much as he wished he did, Doyoung didn't know the pretty girl that happened to be was wearing what looked like his favorite scarf.

[5:40 pm]— “What do you think you were doing?” commander!Doyoung demanded, specks of saliva spraying out of his mouth from how angry he was.
“What you told me to do.” I shifted out of my vest and hung it on its hook. “Why are you pissy?”
“Because you deliberately disobeyed me.” Doyoung took the rifle from my hands although not roughly. “I told you to get out of there with the rest of the unit.” He leaned in close, voice dropping to nearly a hiss. “You could’ve gotten yourself killed.”
I met his eyes. “Then you would be free of an insubordinate soldier.”
Doyoung pinched the bridge of his nose. “I don’t want to lose you, Y/N. You’re too valuable, but you need to listen.”
“I’m not dead am I?”
“No, but it was a close call.”
“Relax, alright?” I scratched the back of my neck, which was insanely itchy from the mix of dirt and sweat accumulating there. “Everyone’s safe and sound.”
“For now,” he said. “Dinner’s in ten. Wash up and lose the attitude. The lieutenant will want to speak to you.”
“Oh, great.” I rolled my eyes. “Tell the grandpa that I’ll speak to him as I am.”
“You’ll watch yourself.”
I couldn’t help but smile. “Alright, I’ll be presentable.”
“Good.” Doyoung turned on his heel. “I’ll return your rifle to the armory.”
Before he could disappear from the room, I called to him. “Will you be there?”
“For when the lieutenant summons you?”
“Yes.”
He looked at me over his shoulder. “Of course. I can’t leave you to your own devices.” And with that, he was gone.

[2:48 pm]— “... and the little bird flew high in the sky. Do you know what he found?” You leaned in closer to the group of toddlers sitting on the floor, their little eyes wide and bright as you told them a story you made up on the spot. “They found...” You began in a hushed tone. “... a rainbow!”
“But you didn’t say that it rained,” one little girl said. She had a pout on her face that made her oh so adorable, and the pig tails sprouting out of her head only completed the look. “Rainbows only come out when it rains. That’s what my brother said.”
You tapped your finger on your chin, humming as you pretended to recall what you said. “You’re right!” you exclaimed after a moment. “I forgot to mention the rain. Silly me.” You offered the girl a smile, and she returned the gesture, pleased to be praised for her intelligence.
Your coworker, Chaewon, peeked her head out of the back room where all the snacks and extra toys were located. “The parents are here,” she said.
“You heard Miss Chaewon, friends!” You clapped your hands together as the toddlers scrambled to their feet. “It’s time to go home!”
You helped the children gather their bags and toys before walking them out to the front of the daycare. The little girl who had corrected your rainbow story held your hand tightly, practically dragging you to a young man who looked to be a few years older than you with a bright smile on her face.
“Doie!” she exclaimed. “Miss Y/N said I’m smart!”
“Well of course you are, squirt.” He gazed fondly at the girl, bringing his hand up to ruffle her hair. “I tell you that everyday.”
“This is different!” the little girl insisted. “Miss Y/N is actually smart.”
“Oh. Is she?” The twinkle of amusement in his eyes was not lost to you as he brought his gaze to meet yours. “I’m Doyoung,” he said, extending his hand.
“Y/N,” you supplied, even though he already knew it, and shook his hand.
“It was nice meeting you, Y/N. I’ll take her off your hands now. Hopefully, I’ll see you around.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow!” You waved at the little girl, and then to Doyoung.
He only winked in response, not missing the way your cheeks heated up. And then he was gone with your favorite toddler in tow.
