Eleven questions given to me by vasolinejesus:
1. What gets you through the day. Not like breathing or eating. What makes you smile? What do you look forward to at the end of the day?
This is gonna sound cheesy, but I get up in the morning because I am a wonder junkie (something a friend called me a long time ago, and it stuck); I want to know everything about everything and each day brings an opportunity to learn something I didn't know before.
At the end of the day I look forward to quality time with my dog. I really can't ever overstate how important he is to me and how he has, on more than one occasion, literally been my only reason for keeping on going.
2. Things are rough all over. Things that shouldn’t be hard are. What is somethings that seems to be too hard to do that should be easier?
Chip bags for Frito-Lay™ products. Man, those fuckers are impossible to open without ripping all the way down the side, and then it's like DORITOS EVERYWHERE and seriously it is 2014 why do we not have easy-open resealable chip bags as a standard?
3. What is your favorite burrito?
I like my burritos simple, with bright flavors. There's a local place here called Sol Burrito where I always get a chicken burrito with lime and chipotles and cilantro and it's consistently great.
4. On that same note, favorite sushi?
I like a good hamachi maki roll, because nothing beats fresh yellowfin with scallion and lemon. Also tuna nigiri, and I'll eat anything with tempura shrimp in it.
5. What is your favorite video game? Any console any arcade?
I think I put enough quarters in the pizza shop Galaga machine in the 80s to have funded my entire undergraduate education. I was hooked on that thing.
6. There used to be record stores. You used to go in and look over stuff. Favorite all time record or CD?
Oh jeebus I had so much vinyl growing up. I was weaned on Joy Division and The Clash and The Buzzcocks and The Smiths and Bauhas and all of that late-70's-early-80s stuff. But my favorite album of all time is probably New Order's "Movement" which I bought on vinyl in 1982. I wish I had kept that record, if only for the iconic Peter Saville jacket art.
7. Food is always big with me. I have no idea why I am still so skinny but I eat everything. I know you have a favorite. What is it?
Nothing will ever, ever top a good, chewy, spicy, genuine NYC pepperoni pizza. Food of the gods, I tell you.
8. School. Something you loved and something you hated.
I hated gym. Don't get me wrong - I played sports in HS and in college, but gym glass was the fucking worst. I think it was because every P.E. teacher I ever had in school was just a washed-out jock who hated kids.
I had one teacher named Mr. Horrigan who I really liked, and he ignited a passion for history for me in junior high school. He was a crotchety, tweedy sort of guy, but he could teach. He taught not by making us memorize dates and events, but by telling stories and connecting the dots. Yeah, such-and-such battle happened in eighteen-yada-yada, by why? He was really good, and I wish school in the US could be more about teaching kids how to think and understand and question, rather than memorize and regurgitate.
9. What was your first car?
I bought a powder-blue 1982 Ford Escort, which ran fine for three months before it developed a crack in the aluminum engine block and completely seized up on me and stranded me in Williamsport PA on a Sunday night as I was driving from Maryland to New York. Bad day.
10. Where are you from? I ask this cause not cause don’t I want to know New York or California. I want to know where your people came from. I can tell you where I came from in Germany but I always love it when I hear how American people are from all over the world. It makes me happy we built this land.
I'm mostly southern Italian, from outside of Naples. I've also got Polish, English, and a touch of Native American blood in me.
11. Worst song you ever heard.
Every song that Smashmouth ever recorded.
