Incredibly moving and full of fascinating descriptions of colorful characters; both neighbors and baseball players.

This memoir is centered on Kearns’ childhood as a Brooklyn Dodgers fan. I was so taken with her description of scoring baseball games while listening on the radio at age 5, so that she could recreate the entire game for her father when he came home from work.

Happy Birthday to author and historian @doriskgoodwin Goodwin wrote "Wait Till Next Year' which is a memoir that tells the story of life in postwar New York suburbia as a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers and how Baseball intertwined with her family life. In a fun fact about Goodwin and her relation to Baseball, Goodwin was working as a journalist for the Boston Globe and became the first woman journalist to be let into the Boston Red Sox locker room in 1979 and worked as a consultant on Ken Burns' documentary Baseball. My Year of the Book - Day 89: There are hundreds of well-written and heartfelt baseball-related memoirs, but here’s why I chose “Wait ‘Til Next Year” (1997) by Pulitzer Prize winner Doris Kearns Goodwin to feature today. I didn’t grow up thinking baseball was just a “boy” thing because my mother was a huge fan of the game. Like DKG, Mom grew up in a staunch and typically large Catholic family (she was the 8th of 9 kids) headed by a father who loved baseball. DKG had the Brooklyn Dodgers, and Mom had the PCL Sacramento Solons and whatever MLB they could get on radio. When grandpa passed away, a local columnist wrote of how he probably had nine kids so he could field his own baseball team. Most of her brothers played the game and played it well. Three played in the minors (all three had their careers interrupted by WWII), and two are in the Sacramento baseball Hall of Fame. In other words, she came by her passion and expertise by osmosis...it was probably in the tap water when she was growing up. She and my Dad were always supportive of my participation in all sports, but although she came to love and appreciate basketball and endure tackle football, she really “got” baseball on multiple levels, perhaps even more than me. Thanks to DKG’s book, I can pull it off the shelf and take a walk down memory lane with my Mom, and that’s like getting a free swing at a fat, hanging curveball out over the plate. Oh...the figurine beside the book is “Casey at the Bat” from the Disney cartoon version of the classic poem by Earnest Lawrence Thayer. It’s been in the background of many of these photos, and a couple people had asked what it was.
