The Dorotabou from Gegege no Kitarou, a Youkai-themed manga by Shigeru Mizuki.
This concludes today’s creature posts. Two people have requested the Chimera, so I'll try to feature that tomorrow. I’m very busy right now, so I’ll be taking a break soon.
Addendum: This is by Shigeru Mizuki but it isn’t from the Gegege no Kitarou manga. This and other exclusive art pages were included with Gegege no Kitarou animé D.V.D.s. Also, the Chimera feature was postponed.
“Dorotabo” by Lorenzo Bonilla. The artist adds some nice little flourishes while staying true to the classic image.
“Dorotabou” by Shota Kotake is one of the more humanoid interpretations of this Youkai I’ve found, yet also the most grotesque.
Rather than emulating Japanese woodblock prints or manga, the artist has gone for a distinctly Western (somewhat Ed Rothian) comic book style. While I called another depiction of the Dorotabou a twisted E.T., this one looks to me like a twisted California Raisin.
I was a kid in the Eighties. Can you tell?
