Okay so disclaimer: this isn’t me giving rick hate. I do like Rick, but he is problematic and no matter how much you love him, you can’t put blinders up. this is just my view and opinion based on his behaviors in the last few seasons where negative character development for him has come to the forefront.
The story lines of the main group. I could honestly care less about what Rick and his people are doing. Like I’m so over the “we’re better people -- we take the high ground” when that’s not true anymore. Also I used to love that Rick always did what was good for his family, not his group and I’m high key not okay with people trying to say Rick is a good dad. He was a good dad -- that’s not true anymore. What good parent would EVER just talk shit to someone threatening to kill their child, someone that you KNOW is 100% going to follow through with the threat?? That’s not a good parent, that’s a man more concerned about his ego/pride and he’s basically a male gorilla puffing his chest out to show his clan that he’s still big and bad and is going to fight the invading gorilla family if we’re gonna compare to some of our closest relatives.
And it’s super obvious Carl sees it -- kids lash out if they feel ignored and forgotten. Just because civilization has fallen doesn’t mean that teen angst behaviors change -- especially the stressed relationship between father and son in teen years which is most def going on rn but it’s not being given the actual proper development.
Also can I just say, it’s when a child enters their teenage years that fathers turn into The Worst because they are coming to terms with their kid, that depended on him, not needing to depend on him. Again, it’s male ego/pride. And the relationship between Carl and Rick is almost EXACTLY like my step dad and my 18 year old brother because it’s natural in close knit relationships like this.
It’s okay though. I know it’s negative character development and negative character development is an interesting and unique thing but it has unfortunately caused me to not care about the main group and just not care because I know this behavior personally.
TBH I’d be far more interested in a spin off that followed Negan and how he came to be Negan so we could see how Simon & Arat became his most loyal of alllies.
