The Writing Thing
So, I’ve got this itch. This craving. This desire. I really want to write a wild west hard-sci-fi. What does that mean? Well, the setting of the wild west has always intrigued me, the aesthetic of both raw human will over and inhospitable wilderness, aided by the technological wonders of the age - the gun, advanced iron tools and an empire built with the power of man-power and horse-power and trains and steam and railways. And the idea of taking things to their logical extremes in terms of technology and, in fact, sociology. The “what-if” scenarios that abound in such fertile historical ground given a few fundamental tweaks in the basic political or social situations. Because, in good science-fiction, the human condition, though the social sciences, are just as important as the physical sciences of physics, chemistry and biology.
That and I’ve been disappointed today. After a huge XCOM 2 binge I have been left wanting MOAR! And I had my hopes set on this game I’ve heard about called “Hard West”, which is a tactical turn-based set in the wild west! How awesome, right? But it’s a fantasy... and suddenly my interest drops into the negatives. Especially when I learn it is based hard in christian mythology. Which basically makes the game anathema to my sensibilities. It’s just so... gross.
The only other games I haven’t played in the tactical turn based genre are either also fantasy or based around heavily armoured flesh-refrigerator space marines. Bleh.
So I feel the need to replace this disillusionment with an actual wild west hard-science fiction. Something with crude electrical devices and rocketry and hydraulics and pneumatics and massive steam engines and monarchies built on the high deserts of the midwest (that aren’t based on religious ideology but on the social philosophers like Hobbes or on even more Machiavellian principles).
Coupled with this my already ongoing stories I really should be working on this weekend and meeeeehhh... (thud)...
Oh well, a little horse opera never hurt anyone.
Onward!
When did I ever...?
So, it’s been a long time since I’ve checked tumblr - what with the move and work and building a new social life, the interwebz tends to fall through the cracks. But now that I’m back on my accounts I realize I have no idea why I was following some of the things I was following. The last few days I’ve mostly just been unfollowing stuff. Was I even worse about drinking and internetting last year than I am this year...? Jeez, makes me doubly glad I don’t drive, I’d be a serious danger to the public. (I have no depth perception and spotty peripheral vision - even without alcohol, me driving is a disaster waiting to happen)
I startled a skunk last night.
So, I was heading home last night at around 1, from my favourite BDSM playspace in the City, when I encountered a skunk running along the sidewalk toward me in the bounding little way they run. When we saw each other we both froze and were all like “Oh shit! A skunk/human!”
I was the bigger person and politely crossed the street and we both continued on our way. Then I find out what the skunk was running from. Back the way the skunk had come was the crazy cat house where the owners of the house leave plates of catfood out to attract stray cats (I hate those people! Grr!). And the whole area STINKS of skunk spray, and there is a big, pissed off raccoon that is NOT happy and right in the middle of the stink. The whole narrative sort of became all too obvious from there.
The moral of the story is, always get the hell out of the way of skunks, even when there is free food involved. Here endeth the lesson.
Uhhhh... where did I go just now?
So, I’ve been away from tumblr for about six months now. And... yeah, I have no excuse. I’ve been doing real life stuff and so forth. But hi, Tumblr. I’m back, I suppose. Things and stuff.
I like to hold up the narrative that I fell through a timewarp or something. And it has only been moments for me. Because time travel narratives are fun.
Anyway, can someone explain to me what the hell “vore” is all about and why “voriphiles” keep flocking around my stories? I don’t really get what their “thing” is. And that makes me unhappy because I want to be able to pander to the nice fetishists who like my stories. Anyway, hello again. And things.
I may or may not have been drinking tonight.
Confession time
I am addicted... to Kerbal Space Program. Oh my goodness! I cannot stop, nor do I want to stop, flying space ships around and managing colonies on other worlds with the Kolonization mods! Weeeee! ^_^ Tiny green space men and women using real life, existent space flight technology! Yaaaaah! XD I've got an hour until I'm home and I am going to get dinner and go straight to my computer in order to start putting up my communications satellites (remoteTech mods), and practicing my flying using only the internal IVA view with the raster prop monitor mods. I'm seriously also thinking about making a blog all about my little kerbals' adventures. Also, how do I have almost 90 followers on this blog? O_o I almost never update it. I mean, okay - thank you. ^_^ I'll try to update more.
I'm very grumpy today
Grrr.
We'll be Right Back
Ask Barnabus and friends will return next week, same robot time, same robot channel! Things just got a little away from me this week and I figured rather than scramble to get another short post written I'd give it one round and get back on track properly next week. Have a great week and weekend and we'll see you all next week, Wednesday at 7pm PST. Cheers! ^_^ -Double Deadline
