Make that a double
Primroses typically have five petals but these cultivars demonstrate a common genetic problem in flowers of many species called ‘doubling’. First noticed in roses by Theophrastus in 286 BC, doubling occurs when a specific gene (AGAMOUS) is impaired or fails completely. AGAMOUS is involved in the final stage in the development of stamens. When stamen production falters the previous suite of genes, which produce petals, don’t know what to do, so they react in the only way they know - by producing more petals. In cases where one copy of the gene is merely damaged it is possible to produce weak seed. In a worst-case scenario no seed is produced and the plant has to be propagated with cuttings.
There's a field full of daffodils up near the confluence, and they're all double-flowering mutants. Unusually for feral daffodils. Do I ask for permission to dig some up, or just go sneakily with a small shovel, once they've died back?
