I need. Ranpo/Dazai/Chuya polycule
Attention a possibly very ooc characterisation of Chuya. Maybe Dazai too but eh.
I also apologise for any mistakes, it’s late and eng is not my first language
1. First it’s Ranpo and Dazai. They don’t even notice at first or just forget to actually talk about it, deciding on their own minds that this is how they function now - handholding, sweet gifts, sitting near and pressing their shoulders together. They realise they never talked about it only when someone asks. Both cringe at the term “boyfriend” and say “partners” (though Dazai uses “boyfriend” teasingly).
It’s. Safe. They are safe with each other, they can protect themselves and each other. They are not afraid to lean on the other. Dazai trusts Ranpo’s plans without questions and always notices when he’s getting bored or restless with worry, and distract him, gets him a new puzzle, eases his worry with surety and back-up plans.
Ranpo notices when Dazai is too deep in his head, to close to a serious attempt, too twitchy and fake to be okay. He soothes Osamy - with his presence, with his touch, that doesn’t make No Longer Human raise up in Dazai, with his “I am the smartest person in the room. Rest, dummy”. He never lies, he never sugarcoats and he never dismisses Dazai’s past OR present
2. Then it’s Chuya leaving his coat on Mori’s table and disappearing. I’m thinking 5 or more years since canon? Mori has Verlaine. He will live. And Chuya, well, he has been loyal to the Mafia this whole time. He leaves instructions and a replacement, he lives Ozaki his number and reappears in the city as a civilian. He got all he could from the Mafia, but does it doesn’t feel like being human per se. He doesn’t mind a few odd jobs when Mori calls though.
Dazai appears on his doorstep and well, that was expected. He observes, almost dances around Nakahara’s flat, pierces him with this all knowing stare.
Chuya doesn’t offer to stay for dinner. Dazai still does.
They are on talking basis. It’s strange, but not entirely uncomfortable. Osamu makes Chuay angry. And makes him laugh. Chuya still never shies away from his touch, still sees the exhaustion and the cold indifference to violence. What it doesn’t feel like…it doesn’t feel like Nakahara is his only reason to live. Doesn’t feel like the words of the dead man are the only reason too. Chuya admits it only in his head, but he likes this version of Dazai, still self-deprecating at times, but not shattered or a step away from a serious attempt.
3. Then it Ranpo and Chuya. Ranpo’s stare is even worse. Nakahara feels itchy under it. Edogawa doesn’t like Chuya and doesn’t like sharing. But Chuya knew the side of Dazai Ranpo never saw (and thank God). Ranpo knows the new Dazai. They can learn things from each other. And Chuya is not an active threat. And well. Dazai…Dazai looks at him with this stupid glint in his eyes. Not like he’s a ghost of Mafia past Osamu wants to forget.
4. Then it’s Dazai laying on their carpet, looking at the ceiling. He’s in a star pose. Ranpo is reading a new novel from Poe but he can practically hear Osamu’s mind running with a speed of light.
“I think I still like chibi-chan”
“I figured”
Osamu laughs because of course Edogawa did
“Plans tomorrow?”
“Case”
“Mm. And I might have a date”
There’s a question in this. There’s a slight tilt to Dazai’s head when he waits for a response. “Are you okay with it” though he knows Ranpo is.
“Well, just don’t leave him in the middle of forest again”
“I will think about it”
5. And then it Dazai in the middle getting kisses ‘cause I said so. Ranpo and Chuya aren’t dating, but Dazai pulled the smartest man in the country and one the most powerful ability users.
Mori’s eye twitches a lot.
Atsushi is mildly terrified of that trio.
