I expose myself like a naive dog; desperate for domestication and attention and even abuse.
My belly, with my soft insides, is always open for you to attack.
You could pull out my stitches easily.
Spill my stuffing and guts.
I’ll follow you on a lease and crawl on my hands and knees.
Palms and paws with gashes filling with dirt and rocks and salt.
Knees and legs being achingly dragged along.
I am tired yet I keep following and do not run.
I am a stuffed dog begging to be ripped apart and sewed back together with your hands.
I let myself be pulled and strung out.
My threads are falling apart and you do not fix them.
They are too tight and too loose as they catch.
I run after you, my threads catching on the rocks and tree and claws.
I’m trapped and desperate and break them to reach you.
You let them unravel and I let you.
A stuffed toy that begs for an owner and cannot help letting themselves be torn apart.
I do care as my stuffing and blood fall out but it’s better than feeling nothing.
Begging for scraps is better than not eating at all.
I wish you would torture me again.
(Another poem that is like a sequel to the one above.)
He said he didn’t want to hurt you. Stop begging for him back.
- I feel so much right now. Can’t I just want that comfort again?
You know how this will end. You would both only hurt and hurt and hurt more. It would be worse.
- What if it’s different?!
- Can’t I just imagine and hope and dream and make my suffering worse without you chastising me?
No. You can’t. You care about him so you will not but you do post jabbing poems hoping he will see. You do listen for his footsteps hoping one day he will change his mind.
- I’m trying to civil and distance myself. I’m trying to be his friend again but I can’t help feeling this pain and wanting him to know just a moment of it.
You ignore the pain he feels.
- He didn’t tell me. How am I supposed to know?
By thinking and caring about him like a friend.
- I cannot help hoping he’s in pain too but I can’t see it and he doesn’t tell me but I want to wish more because I’m hurting so bad and I want it to go away.
