“It’s not fair.“ You said softly as you sat in bed between your husbands thighs, staring blankly at the fireplace crackling across the room. “I just got you back… we just got you back.”
“I know baby girl.” Bucky said with the smallest of nods against your shoulder. “But it’s the last time. I’m done after this.” He pulled you impossibly closer as your tears fell down your cheeks and landed on his arm around your chest… and his hand that was covering your first child that you had only known about for a day thanks to your unreliable cycles. He inhaled deeply through his nose and kissed your shoulder. “We can do this.”
“I just hate that you’re gunna miss everything.” You whispered.
“I know, baby girl.” He said barely loud enough for you to hear as a few tears finally fell from his blue eyes. You both jumped the slightest bit as your first alarm of the morning went off on Bucky’s bedside table. Your tears fell harder as he reached over and shut it off before holding you even tighter. “We’ll get through this tour, baby. We can do this. One more tour.” He said as he buried his face in your neck.
“I love you.” You sobbed as you turned in his arms, straddled his lap, and wrapped him in a tight hug. “I love you so much, baby.”
“I love you, too, baby doll.”
——
“I’m sorry… I didn’t hear you correctly.” Natasha said as she jumped to her feet beside you in your first doctor’s appointment. “You said twins, right? Two babies, that’s what I’m hearing?”
“Sissy, sit down.” You hissed as you pushed your older sister’s face out of your way and sat up a little bit. You looked at the two, twelve week old fetus’ and huffed a humorless laugh. “God, no wonder I’m so fat. Ow!” You scowled at Nat for flicking you in the forehead.
“You’re not fat.” She said under her breath in Russian before switching back to English. “Maybe you shouldn’t have waited to find out. We should have demanded the earliest appoint…”
“You can’t tell Steve it’s twins.” You said as a smile spread across your face. “Imagine how shocked Bucky’s gunna be to come home…” Your ultra sound tech giggle to herself as she measured both babies’ weights and added them to your chart.
“You can’t…” She started before she looked back up at the screen. With a slight bob of her head, she poked out her bottom lip and shrugged. “Meh… who am I kidding? You wanna keep it from him, who am I to tell you no.”
“A smart sister, that’s who.” You said as you reached out and tapped the computer monitor. “Can we just isolate one at a time in a photo?”
“Yea, you got it.” Your tech laughed as she moved the wand the slightest bit to get another photo.
“He’s gunna lose his shit.” Your sister laughed as she sat back down and crossed her slender legs. “You’re in for a hell of a long pregnancy, sister.”
“Yea but it’ll be worth it.”

“So how’s mommy doing today?” Bucky asked on the video chat a week after your appointment.
“Mommy’s fat.” You laughed as you curled up on your couch in one of your husband’s army sweaters with your laptop on your knees. “No, I’m doing really good. We have a due date finally… Which happens to be three weeks before you come home.”
“Shit.” He groaned as he scrubbed his hand down his face. “Fuck, I was hoping I’d be home for the birth.”
“I know, baby.” You said with a nod. “But, Nat’s gunna be in the room with me and she’s gunna make sure it’s recorded for you. I know. It’s not the same.” You said before he could as you nodded your head. “But these are the cards we’re dealt.” He nodded his head as he leaned forward and rested his forearms on the table his laptop was on.
“At least I can be there in person for our second child’s, right?” He said hopefully. You smiled and nodded as you bit the inside of your lip to keep yourself from spilling the news that only you, Natasha, and your best friend, Wanda, knew.
“Yea baby, we’re almost done with tours. I sent copies of the ultrasound to you in the mail the day of my appointment.”
“I got ‘em, thanks doll. I say it’s a girl.” You smirked at him and nodded.
“Me, too. Oh, off topic side note, I found that plum sauce stir fry recipe you love so much. It was tucked behind a different recipe in book.”
“Oh yay.” He said with a smile. “And another off topic side note, did Pietro come over to fix the air conditioner?”
“Yea he came by yesterday.” You told him. “It was just a rusted block of pipe. He just replaced the whole thing for me.”
“Good. I was concerned since it’s almost summer.”
“Aww, you’re concerned about me?” You teased.
“No, I’m concerned about my baseball cards getting destroyed by the humidity.” He joked back.
“You’re a butt.” You laughed.
“Yea, but I’m your butt.” You hummed contently and nodded.
“Yea, you are, baby. Yea you are.” He sighed and glanced at his watch as someone called his last name.
“I gotta get going, baby doll.” Your smile fell the slightest bit and you nodded as he sat up and got ready to go back to work.
“Alright, baby. Be safe, I love you.”
“I love you, too, honey. I’ll call you in a couple days.” You nodded your head and blew him a kiss.
“We’ll be here.” You quickly shifted your legs, moved your laptop farther down your shins and lifted up the bottom of his sweatshirt. You smiled with Bucky as he reached up and touched the screen.
“Bye my loves.” He looked up at you for a half second before he had to sign off to go to work. As the screen turned blue, tears welled in your eyes and you put your hand over your bump.
“Daddy’ll be home soon, sweethearts.” You told them and reminded yourself. “Daddy’ll be home soon.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Wanda…” You whined as you tried, unsuccessfully to roll you and your thirty three weeks along bump out of bed after a pre-baby shower nap. “I can’t.” Your best friend since childhood, who had spent most of the day in your kitchen cooking for you, stuck her head around the corner of your room and burst out laughing.
“You look like a turtle.” She joked as she came over and grabbed your hand and your hip. “Let’s go turtle mama.”
“That’s not nice!” You laughed as she pulled you onto your side and helped you sit up. “Damn, I’ll be so happy when this is all done.”
“No more secrets then, yea?” You rolled your eyes at her and stood up, using Bucky’s bedside table to make sure you had your balance before you started walking out to great the guests that were already waiting for you.
“No more secrets.” You had no idea how you had managed to pull it off; how you had managed to go through your entire pregnancy without letting it slip to Bucky that he was going to be the father of two identical baby girls and not just one.
Your stress level was five times higher than it normally was since everything you did in regards to your daughters had to be carefully monitored. Your pregnancy announcements had to be done twice, one that was being sent over seas to Bucky and Steve, Natasha’s husband and your husband’s best friend, announcing just one future little Barnes and one that was being sent to friends and family announcing not only the truth but a plea that no one share the news with either soldier. The weekly update photos had to be done twice, excuses on why you were getting as big as you were as fast as you were needed to be kept straight, and you constantly had to make sure that you said ‘she’ and not ‘they’ when you talked about your kids. The longer you kept up the ruse, the more frustrated you got. You were seriously regretting your decision to lie but now it was too late to go back and confess.
“So how did you come up with names?” Laura, another army wife that lived in the base neighborhood with you asked as you kissed her cheek on the way to grab some of the munchies on the table.
“Well I sent Bucky a list of all the ones I liked the most and told him to pick his top two favorites and I would surprise him with my choice.” You smirked and glanced over at her as you picked up one of the strawberry brownie kabobs. “And that man is one smart cookie. He managed to pick out my two favorite names for the girls, Sophie and Sadie.”
“I like those names.” Bucky’s sister, Becca said as she grabbed herself a drink; a mom-osa. “I can’t wait to meet my nieces.”
“Well I hope that they come soon. I want to be able to see my feet again like yesterday.”
——
You got your wish exactly four weeks later which was also 15 days before Bucky came home, three weeks earlier than he was supposed to. You had planned on sending Bucky photos of both girls to see if he would be able to tell that there were two different babies, but the older twin, Sadie, had not only her daddy’s blue eyes like her sister, but also a gorgeous hazel eye as well, which was something you learned Bucky’s great grandmother and a couple distant cousins had as well. So, when the girls were awake, you send photos of just Sadie but he received both girls (in separate photos) when they were asleep and he couldn't tell there where two as far as you knew.
At two weeks and one day old, you and Natasha put Sadie in a ‘hi daddy’ onesie and Sophie in a ‘surprise daddy’ onesie, loaded them up in the car, and headed to the base to welcome your significant others home. Once you got there, you choose to hold Sophie as you waited for the buses just to keep your nervous shaking at bay.
“He’s gunna lose his mind.” You said to Natasha with a giant smile. “Shit he’s gunna be so mad at me.”
“Well you’re the one that came up with this idea.” She said with a shrug as she rocked Sadie back and forth. “Here they come.” You looked over at her and glanced up at the two doors to the base gymnasium as the double doors opened to allow a wave of returning soldiers in from the cold.
“Alright, give her.” You said to Nat as you moved Sophie to your right arm to take Sadie in your left. Your sister moved quickly and passed her over and you turned back toward the doors a few seconds before Bucky and Steve came in behind the rest, laughing about something you were too far away to hear. You stood perfectly still and simply waited, not wanting to bring your daughters into the throngs of people trying to find their loved ones.
“And we’re recording.” Your sister said of the small GoPro she had on a tripod behind you as you watched Bucky look around the room for you. Your smile grew impossibly bigger as his blue eyes found your tear filled eyes and you let out a choked laugh as he tripped over his own feet when he saw you with two babies and not one.
“What is this?” He asked as he ran over to you and dropped his bag at your feet.
“Surprise.” You laughed as he gave you a chaste kiss and looked down at his baby girls.
“Wait, there’s two?” He asked as he looked back and forth between them.
“There’s two. Identical twins.” Tears welled in his eyes as he reached up and brushed his hand across Sadie’s soft brown hair.
“Holy shit.” He choked as he bent down to give her a shaky, gentle kiss. He looked back up at you with a shake of his head. “(Y/N)…”
“Welcome home, daddy. Wanna hold them?” He nodded as a few tears of joy fell on his wind bit red cheeks. “This is Sadie. She’s the oldest, who has the two different color eyes.”
“That’s why you had me pick two names.” He laughed as he carefully took his oldest from you.
“Yep. This is Sophie. And just so you know, you’ve seen pictures and ultrasounds of both of them. I went back and forth on who I sent you.” He nodded his head slowly as he looked back and forth between the babies that looked even smaller in his muscular arms.
“Twins.” He said as he looked up at Steve with a huffed laugh. “Two babies.”
“I see that.” Steve chuckled as he gave you a kiss on the cheek. “You did good, kid.” You smirked and bumped his shoulder with yours as you turned your attention back to your family.
“There’s two of you.” He cooed as he looked down at Sophie, who was looking up at him with her gorgeous, bright blue eyes. “Yea. Mommy’s a little shit to daddy, huh? Yes she is.” You giggled as he leaned down to give her a kiss as well.
“Let’s go home, baby.” You said as you bent down, grabbed his duffle, and put it on top of Sadie’s carseat on your stroller.
“Wanna go home?” He asked Sophie as she yawned and stretched against his arm. “Yea baby girl. A nap sounds real good to me too.”
“See, he’s not mad.” Nat joked as she turned off the camera and collapsed the legs of the tripod so the four of you could head home.
“That’s because the surprise was adorable.” You giggled as Bucky let Steve take Sophie while you walked so he could say hi to his niece, too.
“I’m proud of you, baby doll.” Bucky said softly as he gave you one more kiss and put his free hand on the small of your back.
