The Holey Grail: Doughfest 2016!

As soon as I heard that Time Out New York was hosting their own Doughfest, on Saturday, March 19 at Marquee,  I jumped online and bought myself and my Mom a ticket. My Mom, also known as this project’s “South Brooklyn Correspondent,” was super excited to attend her very first doughnut festival, and having rolled in the dough for the last three months, I was pretty prepared for what the day had to offer. Quite a few spots showed up to dough down, and pictured above were my Mom’s and my favorites of the day:

Mom’s Holey Grail: A black raspberry jelly-filled doughnut from Orwasher’s Bakery. I doughnut think you’re ready for this jelly! This sweet but not too sweet dough, topped with powdered sugar, was a standout dough of the day for our South Brooklyn Correspondent. This might have been her first doughnut fest, but Bev knows food like the back of her hand.     

My Holey Grail: A brown butter and sea salt doughnut from David Burke Kitchen. This dough was more on the savory side and it was so doughferent from anything I’d tasted before, I had to give it a special shoutout. 

This festival was a great introduction to some great bakers and great flavors. Doughfinitely glad I went!

Doughnuts and Drag Queens and DJs, Oh My!: Time Out’s #Doughfest

Doughfest: the “event that feeds your guiltiest pleasure” took place Saturday, March 19th at the Marquee nightclub in the heart of Chelsea. Time Out served as host and invited together some of the best doughnut producers in New York.

I was completely on board the moment I heard this event existed and it took very little self-convincing to purchase tickets. I’ll admit that they had me at “doughnut” (I felt no need to read the event description further) and I had no idea what to expect.

I can’t really describe the wave of shock and delight that swept over me the moment I entered the venue and was met with drag queens, a DJ, and LED doughnut décor.

The venue was PACKED (too packed in my opinion given the venue size vs. turn out) and trying to get to the doughnuts at first was like competing in the Hunger Games. It took a few moments to figure out the flow, but after biting into my first doughnut (a crispy bacon topped morsel from The Doughnut Project) all was forgiven (My friend Aaron agreed).

I quickly made my rounds to sample as many doughnuts as my waistline would allow. Some of my personal faves were a satisfyingly tangy passion fruit twist from Underwest Donuts, a do-it-yourself jelly doughnut hole from David Burke Kitchen, and a PB & J that tasted like yo’ mama used to make from Leske’s Bakery.

Other participating vendors included: Mike’s Donuts, Orwashers, Sweetleaf Coffee, Tsingtao Beer, and Bailey’s.

DOUGHFEST

Sweet tooth overload! Yesterday my good friend from Feed Me Seymore invited me to join her at Doughfest presented by TimeOut (well honestly I read about the event and I was like WE SHOULD GO LOL).  She got tickets and being as though I am a devout doughnut lover this was the holy grail of foodie events for me.  The event took place in Manhattan at the Marquee on 10th Avenue. It was like going to a day party at the club with several sweet tables.  When we walked in there was a DJ playing classic tunes on the stage and various vendors situated around the club.  I was pretty excited because a lot of the bakeries featured have been on my list of places to try out for a while. 

So first up was Underwest Donuts.  Out of their selection my favorite was the Maple Waffle doughnut.  It was fairly spot on in tasting like a breakfast waffle, yummy.

Then I checked out Mike's Donuts, they're a Brooklyn based bakery I've been ive been meaning to check out for a while. They had the most variety of cake style donuts to choose from and they were all pretty tasty, however my favorite was the apple filled pastry.

Orwashers Bakery had these strawberry and blackberry doughnuts. I found the jelly a tad bit sweet for me, but my friend really enjoyed them.

A little overwhelm and on a sugar rush at this point I went to the vendor who had the longest line and the least amount of doughnuts left The Doughnut Project, and boy they did not disappoint.  They were my favorite bakery from the event.  I usually prefer the yeast style of doughnuts and they had this artisan olive oil black pepper doughnut called The Bronx that was out of this world. It was light, fluffy and moist.  I was expecting it to be savory but it was just the right mix of sweet. I wish I had a better picture to share but they were rationing out fairly small pieces of this heavenly delight so it was hard to capture it.

Other vendors included Leske's Bakery who had an enjoyable peanut butter and jelly doughnut, and David Burke Kitchen.  Doughfest also had numerous beverages to choose from like Sweetleaff coffee, Tsingtao Beer and Baileys cocktails.  Overall the event was enjoyable.  I left there with a serious sugar high, but I am now knowledgeable of more delectable doughnut options in the city and even though Dough will always be my favorite doughnut spot I now have a few new bakeries to frequent this summer.
