Day 61: Lime A Little Coconut!
It's almost Friday, and I'm celebrating with a coconut lime cake doughnut from Doughnut Plant! It's about lime I tasted something so doughlicious!
July Favorites!
So I am officially more than halfway there in my quest to eat 100 doughnuts in 2016, and I couldn’t be happier! These past seven months have been extremely busy, and I didn’t realize when I began this project just how time-consuming seeking out unique doughnuts would be, but I sure found out the hard way. Hopping from subway to subway and (sometimes literally) running to make it to a shop before it closes hasn’t been all that glamorous at times, but it’s always been rewarding when the sweet taste of victory (victory meaning doughnuts) sets in. Sure, I might never want to eat another doughnut for the rest of my life once this year is over, but I’ve only kind of gotten sick of them by now. This summer has been so jam-packed, I didn’t even get a chance to compile a list of June favorites, but I will say, a highlight of the month was hitting the halfway point with a fruity pebbles doughnut from Darn Doughnuts in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. As far as July goes, I tried to take advantage of a month full of exceptional weather, and made it my businesses to scope out different spots and unique flavors in the process. Sometimes, the heat actually hindered my plan more than it helped, like when my limited-edition Pokemon Go-themed pecha berry-filled doughnut from Doughnut Plant melted in my purse before I could take a good photo. But overall, the sun and motivation to go outside (thanks Pokemon Go) has helped me meet and exceed this month’s doughnut quota. So without further ado, here are my top picks of July:
Top Shop: Rocking Horse Café
This Mexican Chelsea brunch spot is a favorite among my friends and me. With a prix fixe menu, which includes drinks, the food is filling and our glasses runneth over—what more could you ask for? Oh yeah, doughnuts. (Which I’ll get to later; spoiler alert: it made this month’s top three.) The restaurant itself is awesome. Besides the coveted prix fixe menu, the wait staff are lovely and more than willing to give patrons menu suggestions, as all the delicious choices may be a bit overwhelming. They also don’t rush parties out, a commonality among bottomless brunch spots. It’s not too loud or crazy, and you can actually hold a decent conversation over a more than decent meal. I will doughfinitely be coming back for more!
Third Place Favorite Dough: Lavender, vanilla and pistachio doughnut from Doughnuttery
This tiny treat from Doughnuttery came in orders of six, which was perfect for me, because I often find it difficult to finish a whole, giant doughnut in one sitting. The small bites which I spaced out over the day allowed me to discover more about this dough’s flavor profile that I didn’t notice in the previous bite. I’d always loved the smell of lavender, and as we all know, smell and taste are two closely-related senses, and in this doughnut, I smelled the lavender more than I tasted it, but its cooling effect helped mellow the warmth and sometimes overwhelming taste of vanilla and pistachio. These flavors layered on top of one another were much more complementary than overwhelming, making it this month’s third favorite dough.
Second Place Favorite Dough: Chocolate hazelnut doughnut from Doughnut Plant
This classic chocolate hazelnut filled doughnut just reminded me how much I adore Nutella. It might not be the most original, sophisticated doughnut, but sometimes, simple, modest flavors are all you need. This warm, vanilla-glazed dough was topped with walnuts, which helped cut the sometimes overwhelming sweetness of the chocolate hazelnut, and I appreciated the fact that Doughnut Plant did not skimp on the filling, as so many spots do. This dough was just what this chocoholic needed, making it my second favorite pick of the month.
First Place Favorite Dough: Buñuelo from Rocking Horse Café
Rocking Horse Cafe, my top shop of the month, offered a Mexican doughnut, or buñelo. This fritter is a small fried doughnut paired with warm chocolate sauce and whipped cream. A single order comes with five buñelos, and although they’re a little heavy, they were delicious. The chocolate sauce heightened the sweetness and the whipped cream acted as a great cooling agent. The ambiance of the restaurant paired with the warmth and savory flavor of this dough made it my crowned jewel of the month.
Day 60: You Can Have Some Of My Nutella, Ella, Ella!
I stopped by Doughnut Plant for a chocolate hazelnut doughnut and dough my goodness, this chocolate hazelnut-filled beauty made today a Monday Funday! Have a doughlicious week!
Day 59: This Sh*t Is B-A-N-A-N-A-S!
I ventured into the city last night for a show and snagged a bag of coffee, chocolate and banana flavored doughnuts from Doughnuttery in Chelsea Market, and as Gwen Stefani says, that sh*t was BANANAS! B-A-N-A-N-A-S!
Day 58: Gotta Catch ‘Em All!
I doughnut know about you, but I've been obsessed with Pokemon Go, so I ventured over to Doughnut Plant for my very own Pokeseed doughnut, a pecha berry filled doughnut, and of course it melted in this heat before I could take a good photo. But doughnut worry, it tasted a lot better than it looked!
Day 57: I Regret Cracker Jack Squat!
I kicked off this weekend with a Cracker Jack doughnut from Darn Donuts and it was absolutely nuts! Hope everyone's Friday was poppin!
Day 56: Pistachi-oh Yes!
I kicked off this week with a lavender, vanilla and pistachio doughnut from Doughnuttery’s booth at Broadway Bites in Greely Square Park, and it was anything but vanilla! This treat may have been tiny, but it doughfinitely packed a punch! Happy Mondough!
Day 55: The Key (Lime) To My Heart!
Happy Tuesdough! I finished off this day with a tangy treat: a key lime pie doughnut from Darn Donuts, and lime so glad I doughcided to end this day with such a beauty!
Day 54: Que doughlicioso!
I welcomed the weekend with a doughlightful brunch, followed by buñuelos, or fried dough, with chocolate sauce and whipped cream at Rocking Horse Cafe and it was to dough for! These fried fritters only made me hungry for more!
Day 53: Rose To The Occasion!
Today I stopped by Doughnuttery’s booth at Broadway Bites at Greely Square Park and picked a pack of flower power mini doughnuts. These hibiscus, honey and rose-flavored treats rose to the top of my list, honey! Just doughlicious! Do yourself a favor and snag a bag!
Day 52: Red, White and Doughnuts!
Happy Indoughpendence Day! I celebrated this Fourth of Dough-ly with a creme-filled stars and stripes doughnut from Dunkin Donuts. Tastes like freedoughm!
Day 51: Happy Shark Week!
I'm unhinging my Jaws and celebrating Shark Week with this doughlicious jelly-filled, shark-topped doughnut from 7-eleven. Hope everyone's week fin-ished on a doughlightful note, and everyone's ready for this beautiful three-dough weekend! Happy Fridough!
Day 50: DOUGH, WE'RE HALFWAY THERE!!!!
I doughnut believe I've eaten 50 doughnuts and my journey to stuffing my face with 100 doughs is halfway doughver! I reached this milestone with a fruity pebbles doughnut from Darn Donuts in good ole' Bay Ridge, and it was absolutely doughlicious! Only 50 more to dough!
Day 49: Taste The Rainbow!
Happy Pride weekend! I welcomed this day with a raindough doughnut from Donut Pub. Have a great weekend, and doughnut forget to love and accept everyone!
Day 48: You jelly?
It's almost Friday, and I'm celebrating with this powdered sugar jelly doughnut from Mike’s Donuts in good ole' Bay Ridge! I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly!
Day 47: Spice Up Your Life!
You butter believe I kicked off this week with a sweet butter rosemary doughnut from Dun-Well Doughnuts. This creamy treat really added some spice to my day! I think it's gonna be a great week!
Day 46: Mochi Better!
I kicked off this fly Fridough with a plain sugar-coated mochi doughnut from Cafe Zaiya. This sweet treat made from sticky rice flour tasted just like a churro, but mochi better. It was a doughlicious way to bring in the weekend!
