Title: The Girls of Murder City: Fame, lust, and the beautiful killers who inspired “Chicago”, by Douglas Perry
Genre: Non-fiction, true crime
Aspiring playwright Maurine Dallas Watkins comes to Chicago in 1924 in hopes of making her name as a female crime journalist. Upon securing a job with the Chicago Tribune, she discovers a city seemingly unwilling to convict a pretty woman of murder and the woman’s section of the Cook County Jail filling up with all manner of outlandish characters. Watkin’s experiences reporting on the trials of two such lady murderers, Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner, would later inspire her to write the stageplay that became the musical Chicago. It’s an unbelievable story - if you’ve ever seen the musical or it’s 2002 movie adaptation, you’ll find yourself shocked by the similarities. Reading through, I just kept muttering “holy shit, Holy Shit” to myself - especially with the more ridiculous aspects of the musical, it seems Watkins just changed the names!
Read this if: you’re a musicals fan. You’ll love getting a peek behind the curtain of a musical I thought was too crazy to be true. I’d also tentatively recommend this to true-crime fans, though this book is just as much about media sensationalism as it is about the women’s crimes themselves.
Don’t read this if: you’re looking for a staging/production history of Chicago. This is great, but this won’t be what you’re looking for.
Find it: this can be found on library shelves in the non-fiction section under 364.1523 PER.
Happy reading!
Review : Mammoth
My Thoughts… Okay I am going to keep this review short and sweet… I went into this book with very little expectations. The syopsis was vague and I avoided reading reviews. I found this book to be a great read that was hard to put down. The story is told from multiple-POV. These seemingly unconnected stories, which leaves you guessing at what is actually occuring in the town of Mammoth Falls.…

The Girls Of Murder City by Douglas Perry | Audiobook Review
Why Did I Listen To The Girls of Murder City by Douglas Perry? A long time ago, Hannah at So Obsessed With posted a review of The Girls Of Murder City by Douglas Perry which convinced me to buy the book – and I went for audio because that’s the easiest way for me to get in some non-fiction. I felt like a hard boiled non-fiction book about murderesses would be just the ticket for me and an apt…
