Rest in Peace Sam Glanzman. Sam was one of the quiet giants of Comics. His stories told the tales of ordinary people in extraordinary times. ( very much like his own life ) . His work on GI Combat was an enormous influence on me as a kid, his strip USS STEVENS, told the tale of an intrepid US Navy cruiser in WW2 ( a story close to Sam's heart as he served in the Pacific ) and my favourite, The HAINTED TANK. His depictiom of this plucky tank crew absolutely captivated me as a kid, and I sought out all his other comics... things like Hercules, Attu, Kanu, A Sailor's story ( his most personal book about his tine serving in the Pacific in WW2) Red Range, and Voyage to the Deep, amongst others. He was a prolific and understated artist. His work is gritty and his soldiers, ships and tanks felt truly battlehardened and real. I can't recommend his books enough. DOVER PRESS is now reprinting many of his older titles and I am thrilled new readers will have a chance to discover his stories and art.
