Life Is An Adventure Game
You're born. There's a cost for that. That technically doesn't fall on you though so maybe we should skip forward to adulthood years. If you're doing it right you're mostly if not entirely self sufficient so...let's call our base game freedom. A car and place helps with that. Both cost quite a bit...so you're essentially buying to super special awesome collector's edition of a game right there. I'm talking the ones that if you don't pre order on the spot there are sold out type deal. Even the most expensive one you can think of likely won't equal the cost of these thing but work with me here, will ya? Base game (Collector's Edition...hell the "ultimate edition") is purchased. Freedom obtained. Trophy unlocked. Actually...a place you just come home to...like a console. Yeah, so the place you live at is the console purchase and the game is the car. Perfect! With me so far? Y'all know where this is going…
Now that you have freedom and a console to play it on...well...if you want to increase/enhance your console experience, you may need to purchase an extra controller or accessories. You might even be silly enough to go to GameStop for these things. GameStop in today's day and age will nickel and dime you as bad as mobile games try to. Free to visit them but you may come out with a bunch of stuff you didn't really want. All this work that went into getting the console, game, and accessories already feels like adventure in itself...but there is so much more.
So you know that car you have? It's gonna need insurance. You COULD go without it but probably shouldn't. It will cost you less upfront insurance vs getting caught without it so...might as well get it. Congrats, you have a season pass for your game. However, in today's day and age, the Season Pass is well, not what it used to be. You may have to pay for it more than once. Also, in six months, your price may randomly raise due to unknown factors and you're paying more and more for additional Season Passes to make sure your car is safe. You're spreading out the expenses over time and saving by paying upfront, right? Because you'll be driving it anyway? Makes sense.
Freedom is awesome and you're enjoying it thoroughly...however, something seems off. Suddenly, your progress comes to a slow point. You're not gaining as much experience points from your driving because you are trying to drive less. If you're not gaining experience though, what are you doing? You're gonna have to buy some gas. Gas costs aren't quite factored into that grand total for getting the car now are they? No but you know you need it. Get that thing that you're basically tricked into thinking you need because cars don't have a infinite resource of gas and the gas companies have to make money somehow. Welcome to one of many DLC purchases you will need to make for your new game...freedom. You'll need oil changes about every six months. DLC Pack 2.
So now everything you need to keep up your perfect gaming experience is handled. Until Freedom again reaches a point of being unplayable. You can get more DLC to make the game playable again but at that shop, you know you're gonna be told about the many other things that could be wrong with the game. But hey you don't have to do it. It's optional. You know what else is optional? Microtransactions. The people at the shop however know how to prey on people for the sake of sales. This is getting expensive huh?
When not enjoying freedom you could be just enjoying your console. Where you live. Thing is...for a lot of awesome things on your console, you need to be online for it. If you lose your internet or power, you aren't doing anything. Looks like you have monthly subscription fees too. That's not even counting your streaming services.
It's not all bad. Perhaps you get to do this all with a partner someday. Just make sure they are treating you like a main character and not like an NPC. Life all boils down to one big adventure game. The good news is it is like a "choose your own adventure" one.
