MAY BLOGGING CHALLENGE - Tell us about a time you broke someone’s heart

This made me laugh as my friends say it takes me so long to break up with people that eventually they think it was their idea. I’m okay with that.

I broke up with one guy in high school really poorly. I’d been avoiding him, never a good idea and he confronted me and I dropped the bomb and walked away feeling 100 lbs lighter, it wasn’t until I turned around to see his crestfallen face that I realized that there were two sides to these matters and both were equally important.

I’m still in touch with every man that I’ve dated, who's still alive (2 have died). I’m friendly with nearly all of their wives. These are good people, we were just not the right people for each other. 

When I turned 35, Mom called and said bitterly that she’d given up on me ever marrying so she’d send me the linens which comprised my dowry. They were all handmade by my great grandmother. She made a set for each of my sisters and I, back when we were kids. Yep, doilies, plus tatted lace edging on bath towel sets, dishtowels, sheets, you name it. A few cut work pieces, the works. I love all of these pieces and that she made them by hand, specifically for me.

However, I think the only person whose heart I’ve broken was my mom’s. She really wanted me to settle down, get married, have kids (even though she knew kids weren’t possible without adopting). The Dowry “gift” was a passive aggressive, but nice, gesture on my mom’s part. I'd been engaged a couple of times, and was a serial dater. I don’t know that she ever got over that marriage wasn’t something that was important to me. She wasn’t from an era where it would have been possible for someone to live a full life as a single woman.

Her generation made that life possible for my generation, for which I’m eternally grateful.

Mom was 19 when she got married and had three kids by the time she was 23. Whereas I've been self-employed my entire career, traveled the world (mostly solo), bought my own cars, bought my own house and property. I've loved the men in my life and loved sharing my life with them but I'm also capable of maintaining my life outside of a man supporting me. That’s important to me.

I thought about telling her that K and I were secretly married, while she was in hospice but it was good enough for her that we were still a couple when she died.

I’m editing this to say, There is always pain when you are at odds with someone else. There was here. I didn’t want to hurt my mother, I didn’t want to let her down, but I had to do what I believed was right for my own life. I tried to be open and talk about it, but it wasn’t possible.
