I CAN'T DO THIS
Fic writers out there please give me some Huck Finnigan content. I need to keep my love for him going some how since #Ratched did him dirty šš
Ratched
Dr Hanover: I should have left you on that street corner where you were standing.
Mildred: BUT YA DIDN'T
Betsy Bucket: There's a delicious French pastry waiting for you on your desk! šš„°
Dr. Hanover: Is there any substance in it that may cause a change in my organism's physiology?
Betsy Bucket: Of course not, dr. Hanover!! I'd never give you any drugs!!
Dr. Hanover: Well then consider yourself fired.
Ratched: Richard Hanover - Type 5w6
Dr. Hanover is inquisitive,Ā intelligent and introverted. He seeks knowledge and wants to understand the human mind and the ways to rehabilitate and fix mental illnesses.
At his best, Hanover wants to use his knowledge to help others and treat their afflictions. He takes his oath as a doctor seriously and believes he can treat any human, regardless of their diagnosis. He is more emotionally connected to his patients and listens to their needs while trying to treat them.
At his worst, Hanover begins to unravel and crumble under the pressures he is feeling personally and at the hospital. He abuses medicinal drugs and start acting more scattered and unfocused. He snaps and goes to great lengths to take Charlotte with him as an effort to retain his professional reputation and still prove his capability of treating patients successfully.
Hanover is always looking for new research and information to fuel his practice. He is eager to make innovative discoveries and is always trying to experiment and observe the results for future use. He is very particular and will become stubborn if he believes he is correct, which can be seen when he begins trialling the lobotomy. When the first lobotomy is deemed too extreme and inhumane, he doesnāt give up but instead attempts a less intrusive version of the procedure. He also goes to great lengths to learn new practices and enjoys travelling the world and working with others to find new ways to treat patients.
Hanover is running from his past mistakes and takes on a new identity when working at the hospital. He keeps a side of himself hidden to the world and is very closed off and private. No one at the hospital would know about his personal life, instead only knowing about his credentials as the head doctor of the hospital. He is a workaholic and doesnāt seem to have any friends outside of the hospital. It is only when Mildred discovers his identity that he comes clean with her. He seems remorseful for his actions but is not willing to take responsibility for his part in the tragic circumstances that occurred. He believes he is better off trying to learn and improve his medical practices and help others and he would only be restricted in his efforts to find new medical discoveries if he came clean.
Hanover has a wing 6 as he is more practical and people oriented than a wing 4 might be.
Tri-type: 5w6 - 2w3 - 9w1
Some quotes to describe Hanoverās motivations:
āI shouldāve never let you into this hospital.ā
āIāve treated you poorly, Betsy. You didnāt deserve that.ā
āThe behavior your son exhibits. The violence. The delight in harming others, these are not his illness. They are but symptoms. His illness, whatever it may be, remains cloistered deep in his psyche. And my job would be to find it, diagnose it and treat it.ā
āI take my oath as a physician very seriously. Iāve sacrificed everything for it. So I will not deceive you, Mrs. Osgood. No matter what financial incentive there may be for me to do so.ā
āSince the day I set foot in this hospital, I have loathed you. But you came with the facility, and the previous owner liked you somehow and begged me not to fire you. Nothing is going to happen between us. Nothing!ā
āI think I helped someone today. I really helped someone.ā
āDissociative disorders are notoriously difficult to diagnose. They present as a whole host of maladies; mania, dementia, melancholy, amnesia, schizophrenia. Sheās an extraordinary case, which makes the proper treatment all the more important.ā
āI believe the human mind can crack. I believe a person can snap when experiencing certain stimuli, specific traumas. A person can quite literally lose control and commit unspeakable acts of violence and depravity. They can rape and mutilate one priest, stab another, shatter the skull of a third, and nearly decapitate a fourth, and still they are not necessarily insane, nor are they beyond rehabilitation.ā
Ratched: Episode 2 Reactions
The Lobotomy
Oooh a red light for Dr. Hanover! Getting high before drilling into someoneās skull. That canāt go wrong.
Okay this actor man is very exuberant and itās just a lot for me mentally rn
Ahsdfldsjfkdljfksdjlk Mildred you canāt just call someone a lesbian. She has absolutely no tact; itās hilarious. If only you could actually tell someoneās sexuality by their facial features. My life would be so much easier.
Gwen, yay! Okay I was right, she is hisĀ āsecretaryā but more like PR
Ooh the little glance between her and Mildred
Aw poor Gwen, her face when she finds out one of the lobotomy patients is a lesbian :(
But alsoĀ ājuvenile distractionā like on the one hand that could legit be ADHD but also just like being a child
Omg why does everyone look so disgusted, thereās barely even blood
Okay so Mildred is visiting the survivor of Edmundās killings--sheās gonna find out how much he knows and then kill him, probably
Omg the peach scene. The full thing is even better. This nurseās aide is so not helpful, but sheās funny.
I canāt wait to see what revenge she gets on Bucket
āOh look, my peachā MILDRED XD
Hanover going off on Bucket! I almost feel bad. Meanwhile, Mildred is riveted.
Ew Hanover, donāt get a thing for Mildred
Mm campaigning to get Edmundās leash lengthened, one inch at a time
Look at the way they talk to each other. Theyāre absolutely siblings.
Gwen
Ah, bonding over having their food stolen by Nurse Bucket
Bologna is her favorite food?? Really??
Mildred is a very serious, matter-of-fact person. And very awkward. I hate that itās cute.
Gwen is totally, obviously asking her on a date, and like a true lesbian, Mildred is completely missing it aldkjsfldjfksdjlk this is the most realistic lesbian romance Iāve ever seen
Omg the oyster scene is even better in full. Mildred is SO awkward and sheās BLUSHING and Gwen is smitten.
Is Gwen taking her to a lesbian bar? Is Mildred gonna freak out?
Yep
Edmund
Ooh Edmund playing crazy
Honestly I just need to gush for a minute about what an amazing actor Finn is. Like weāve seen him do some solid roles before, but this scene is just...wow.
Oh damn, Hanover is totally not fooled!
His philosophies are actually fairly progressive, and he does seem like he truly wants to help his patients, which is a lot better than many doctors at the time. Itās just that their ideas aboutĀ āhelpfulā techniques at the time were so backwards.
Oh this kid :((( no thoughts, head empty
Omfg the opera lady singing while sheās getting eaten out sakldsklfjdklfjsk I CANNOT
Fuck, Mildred has gained the priestās trust and sheās gonna get him alone and find out what he knows and kill him fuck
āYouāre suffering, Iām going to relieve that sufferingā did I or did I not say sheās an angel of mercy
āEdmund Tolleson is my brotherā I CALLED IT
Ooh home lobotomy practice! Thatās even better than killing!
Ugh this man is practically a zombie now and they think itās progress just because heās not agitated. Thatās! Not! How! That! Works!
Thoughts and Theories
So, Iām really interested in how theyāre going to play this wholeĀ āgay awakeningā thing with Mildred. I think she kind of knows already but hasnāt accepted it, and one of my big theories after some stuff in the trailers is that she wants to learn how a lobotomy works to try and cure herself. Except now, as sheās seen, a lobotomy doesnāt fix lesbianism. So, whatās next to try?
Her conversation with Gwen is interesting. Mildred clearly has a very strong, if messed up, sense of morality. She freaks out when she realizes Gwen is a lesbian and thinks sheās one, too. They also come down strongly on different sides of lobotomies as a medical practice in general. I canāt wait to see how theyāll interact going forward and how Iām guessing Gwen will help her accept this part of herself.
I was totally right about Edmund being her brother! Mildredās line about him not being born a monster but someone making him that way is really interesting, because I think itās definitely going to be a theme of this show and in general is a theme in Murphyās works. I also think it definitely plays into what she said in episode 1 about not being able to protect him, and she probably carries guilt about that, which is playing into her desire to help him now.
Also, I just noticed that the next episode is literally calledĀ āAngel of Mercy.ā So, yeah, called it lol!
I started Ratched and all I can think about is how handsome Dr.Hanover is my god yes
Jon jon briones what a treasure.
We love a rich well off hard working Filipino doctor that did amazing during the 50s. Haven't finished the show 4 episodes in so I'm sure it'll end badly. I shall stan this man.
I watched episode 3 of Ratched last night and I CANNOT get that imagery of Henry Osgood sawing off the gardenerās arms and his own out of my head. I havenāt watched any of AHS so maybe this is run of the mill for most folks but I am disturbed. I honestly wish Hanover had just told the story instead of showing it. ššš
