Penelope Young was supposed to be the next Harley Quinn?
So I noticed something when looking through Penelope’s private notes, especially on Scarecrow’s file. She gives justifiable summaries to all the other Rogues but when it comes to Crane, she makes him sound like he’s hesitant to do the things he does which isn’t true at all. Then she drew an eye with a question mark in it as well as a crow. And after that, she put down a statement saying “Would he have something to contribute to me research?”
Now what’s the comparison you ask? Harley often wrote Joker as a misunderstood individual when everyone else knew otherwise to the point where she was obsessed with seeing everyone else wrong. In her interviews and in her notes in various media, she also sometimes drew images associated with the Joker, her love for him, or her growing hatred for Batman because she believed she had a connection with him. The drawings were the beginning sign of her madness. Finally, Harley sometimes pondered if Joker could contribute to her understanding but always put it under the notion of the staff’s understanding instead.
That’s a pretty interesting parallel for Dr. Young despite they made her somewhat unlikable in the game where as I thought she may have had some potential. If this is so similar to Harley’s signs of downfall, would Penelope have fallen for Jonathan over time since they also share similar tastes in science and psychology where as Joker and Harley made a (false) connection over humor and past lives? Would Penelope Young have become the Scarecrow’s counterpart?
ive mostly went with stuff that fit the AIs designation: like SAYER's on-paper name being "Oktávián" (-> seraphim agent 8), OCEAN's is a bit funny because i found out you can kinda name your child Vidarr-1 here so like no way to miss that opportunity, and FUTURE's is just the closest i can get to future (even if it ends up meaning fortune)
SPEAKER's name is two puns . im sorry (Föld = Earth; szól = to tell)
Gorsen -> Gorovics; the -sen and -ovics endings both mean "x's son" just in different languages (swedish and slavic languages respectfully)
took some creative liberties with Young's name: Kiss (kis, different spelling) = small, Hunyad = from the surname Hunyadi, which is mostly associated with two rulers in history
Other stuff i forgot to mention in my notes:
i do have some thoughts on how i could translate FUTURE's canon backstory into an everyday au, i think itd involve hospitalization and isolation due to sickness (what ive been pondering is due to a weakened immune system) + parents that really couldnt accept their childrens disabilities
SPEAKER and FUTURE knowing eachother originates from an inside joke (gigglebeetle iykyk) but i think theyd have a field day shittalking SAYER + OCEAN in general . in another lifetime i think they wouldve gotten along in canon
Aerolith is a company that makes medical equipment, headquarters are definitely near the Duna coast somewhere
PORTER is in this au! and she is a tram conductor, but has worked with trains, trolleys and metros too
Aerolith still just as shitty, just maybe less human experimentation, and more government meddling
everyone sucks because this is still mid-NER times . except for Hale, who is very "okay :( yay :(" when it comes to SAYER, but again. [gesturing at the NER's treatment of minorities in the past 16 years]
OCEAN and FUTURE are foils in terms of transgenderism (one has the means to leave, but keeps coming back, because it has not realized, one has it figured out but has not the ability to leave)
FUTURE does some freelance coding stuff, but mostly works as a light + sound tech at the randomest places (see: kripta) . occasional barber

1: has one of my favourite poems ever, Reménytelenül by József Attila, its an extremely Hale poem in my heart (the line at the bottom reads "But for whom would I speak?"

3: do you ever think about how much blood is on Hale's hands involuntarily and how he must feel about that? i do. i do so much. everyone talks about SAYER's guilt but what about Hale's guilt (please note the faint text in the upper left corner)
4: quick animation done in firealpaca, i really just want an animated series of this podcast
5: Halcyon hallways, i think they'd vary a lot in shape and size, some are tall and tight, some have awkwardly low ceilings, but all of them share that hospital-like pristine cleanliness (i was thinking of episode 3 while drawing this)
6: official server bookclub event inspired, ik it was mentioned that Vidarr leaving was noticed by telescopes but what if it was visible by the naked eye...
