I have mentioned how much I love twigcollins’ fanfic “A Kind of Integrity,” the Fran-POV prequel to FFXII suggesting why she “deigned to partner with a hume."
It’s part of a larger story cycle, “moments in another time,” which gives care and attention to Vayne and Cid’s unlikely partnership, the world of Draklor, the occupation of Dalmasca, the upbringing of Larsa (a delightful boy, aged up a few years for purposes of this AU), and most of all Penelo’s experience. Penny is a great character often overlooked by fandom precisely because she represents an ordinary person caught up in extraordinary events, a merchant’s daughter relying on common sense and compassion to deal with people of all classes in this very classist society.
The first several ficlets deal with Vayne, Cid, and Balthier’s rebellion from his father; they’re mostly character sketches that build to an unskippable AU twist with the Nabudis ficlet, "and times being what they are." Then there's a few day-in-the-life short stories: "a presumption that our eyes once watered" in which Vayne takes Larsa down to Old Archades to teach him life lessons, "life in a box" giving Penelo a prequel and showing what it was like living under occupation, and "in atonement..." deals with Vayne’s first momentous day in Dalmasca, suggesting a far more subtle and fascinating character than the game usually had time for. After that comes "A Kind of Integrity," the Fran and Balthier epic that’s on my shortlist of “five best fanfics I’ve ever read,” and if you’re not hooked by then I’m sorry.
TL;DR: The more of this series I’ve read, the more appreciation I’ve had for FFXII, and I was already rather fond of it. I think it will add to your experience of the game.
