You can’t keep a crazy villain or outrageous character down. Some long-lost characters made major comebacks this year in huge comic book events and the year’s biggest box-office champ. This year’s list proved that even the biggest Hollywood and major writers are fanboys and girls too and when given the opportunity – bring their odd but beloved characters back to…

CONFESSIONAL: ORIGINAL SIN RECAP - PART FIVE,
This summer, EatGeekPlay is chronicling Marvel’s newest event comic, Original Sin, spearheaded by writer Jason Aaron. When the Watcher, the big-headed, bald dude on the Moon who sees everything, is executed and his home robbed, an investigation begins throughout the Marvel Universe to find the killer.
The sins of the Marvel Universe are about to be laid bare. Consider this their Confessional.
Original Sin #3
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Mike Deodato
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Last issue saw Z-list villain, having an eyeball for a head extraordinaire the Orb drop the bomb of all the secrets held in one of the Watcher’s eyes on every single superhero in the five boroughs. However, before we can see the effect this had on fan-favorites Ace and Sleepwalker, Jason Aaron has us do a little flashback time in which the Orb approaches Dr. Midas and the Exterminatrix about breaking into the Watcher’s armory. When we come back to the present, we’re treated to a two-page spread of the heroes reacting to the secrets that the Orb just released. Luke Cage, the Hulk, Thor, and Spider-Man react rather violently to the whole thing as they implore readers to pick up their tie-ins (coming soon to a comic shop near you!). Hulk’s pretty pissed at Iron Man and Thor seems troubled to learn that his douche of a father lied about the number of children he has.
Huh. Maybe Loki will finally get past that victim complex when he finds out some poor kid had it worse.
As Dr. Midas and the Exterminatrix escape with their gang of Mindless Ones, the Orb and the Watcher’s eye are taken in by Nick Fury himself. In an ironic turn of fate, the ultimate spymaster didn’t actually have anything revealed to him when the eye went boom. The Orb, like a lot of perps, professes innocence but, given that this is a comic book and every single panel needs to convey valuable information, he’s probably telling the truth.
Deep inside the Earth, we check back in on Black Panther, White Queen, and Ant-Man as they’ve collected a huge back of bullets that Ant-Man presumably had to dig out of a bunch monster corpses. Black Panther posits that this killer may have targeted the Watcher because of what he saw him/her doing.
Switching over to “somewhere beyond our dimension,” Doctor Strange and Punisher flirt their way through their part of the investigation. I $#!& you not, Doctor Strange tells the Punisher that, “I like you uneasy.” The Punisher easily circumvents the wave of homoeroticism – the way only the proud owner of a pair of white go-go boots could – and tells Doctor Strange that there are maybe ten people on Earth (including him!) that could have made the shot that killed an ancient beast they are currently standing on top of. Punisher just wants to ditch this dork but Strange wants the buddy cop movie to continue by checking off each name on the Punisher’s list.
“Must you punish my heart for making me love you?!”
In space, the holy triumvirate of psychotic beatdowns – Gamora, Moon Knight, and Winter Soldier – follow a trail of giant shell casings that lead them to a planet riddled in bullet holes. While that’s going on, the mysterious figure that set these disparate heroes on their investigations – referred to as “Mysterious Boss” on the credits page – instructs a similarly unnamed and shadowy cohort to get ready for some serious $#@& to go down. He laments that they’re going to need a whole lot more of those glowing green bullets that are showing up in so many murder victims lately.
Let’s play a game: is he purposely obscured or does Deodato just suck?
We start jumping around again, this time to Avengers Tower where Hulk and Wolverine are getting ready to give the Orb the Jack Bauer routine. The Orb is a little smarter than his stupid, stupid appearance would indicate so he agrees to talk to Nick Fury. We then cut to Nick Fury as he sits in front of a monitor, watching the interrogation, that does not look entirely dissimilar to the “Mysterious Boss.” Hmmm… Fury gets a relay from Captain America telling him that all the other superheroes are busy with their tie-in stories and they both give a little exposition on how the Watcher’s eye could be used as a secrets bomb.
Back in space, Winter Soldier makes the realization that the killer they’re trying to track has shot the planet the landed on right to hell. See, it may not be Ego, but it was a living planet. While Gamora and Moon Knight literally turn their backs and talk about what it takes to kill a living planet, Winter Soldier activates a device on his wrist and disappears. Then the ship they all flew there in blows up. The two may or may not be connected. Gamora says something about them having “just found our prime suspect.”
Things aren’t looking good for the Winter Soldier’s innocence when he appears from a portal in Nick Fury’s op-room to plug him in the chest. The Winter Soldier starts spouting crazy talk about how there’s “no more hiding” or “running from our sins” as he gets ready to hack into the former Director of SHIELD. Fury, sounding much like a jilted lover, says he never even liked the Winter Soldier before getting his head cut right the #$&@ off. And just like that, the Winter Soldier has claimed the Watcher’s eye and Nick Fury’s head like he’s a part of the world’s most grotesque scavenger hunt.
Uh… Now’s not the time to lose your head? Heads up? Bucky just got ahead of the game? I can’t pick one!
Sins Revealed: 0. Sure, there’s lip-service paid to the revelations of Thor, Luke Cage, Spider-Man, and Hulk but they’re not properly revealed here. There’s a cute moment where civilians exposed to the Watcher’s eye start realizing their spouses cheated on them, etc. but it’s nothing that’s going to impact the Marvel Universe unless their spouse’s affair was with Ben Grimm. And the Winter Soldier/Nick Fury thing? Not very clear so that’ll have to wait.
Greatest Sin: Jason Aaron is a hitman. He was hired to do something here and I must say that he completed his task with great aplomb. Marvel’s been trying to edge out the original Nick Fury in favor of the newer and black Nick Fury, Jr. that is more in line with their movie universe. I imagine that Aaron took the note to kill Nick Fury as the opportunity to give him one last hurrah where he gets some cool moments with a jetpack and exploding cars before being brutally iced. And that just makes it worse! He brought this great character back into the spotlight and then serves him up as a sacrifice to the unholy crossover gods! Shame on you, Jason Aaron. That’ll teach me to have any more feelings about Nick Fury.
