Vauclair’s Inktober Day 21 - Dr. Tannis
Borderlands character pictures, Pt 4
On Tannis:
So I know we got that Battleborn Easter egg that basically said something like “Tannis is not what she seems. Do not open the Vault.”
In Borderlands 1, I don’t know if this is new in the remastered edition or if this is just something I don’t remember: Both Marcus and Zed (EDIT: and Scooter!) really dislike and distrust Tannis.
After you get to New Haven, (and I didn’t notice until after Krom, but it probably started earlier) if you initiate conversation with Zed or Marcus after they have no missions to give, all they do is talk about Tannis.
Marcus:
Im extremely connected here - people want something, they go through me. Tannis though... she’s got support from someone else - someone even I can’t track down.
You gotta admire the kind of drive she’s got, but I think she’s hiding something.
Tannis? I hear she’s a little, you know, out there. Keeps to herself, mostly.
Zed:
That Tannis woman will be the death of you, mark my words.
I don’t know about that Dr. Tannis. Never trust a company man - and especially not a company woman.
We know through the ECHO missions in Borderlands 1 that Tannis came to Pandora working for DAHL on excavation sites when she began losing her mind after her archaeology crew were killed by various creatures and bandits of Pandora. She then spent an extended period of time on her own: hallucinating and talking to inanimate objects, studying the Eridian ruins and the Vault, and occasionally murdering bandits and keeping them for company, all while fully realizing she was losing her mind. We also learn that she called the Vault Hunters to Pandora.
Tannis states on Day 684:
I believe I have some kind of psychosis. Whatever it is, I am a prisoner of my own jail and I will not be able to find anything without help from an outside party. I will put out feelers to see if I can get someone on this rock to grant me assistance. Perhaps I can send an off-world message to attract some Vault Hunters. Some company would be lovely.
After completing Borderlands 1, we are prompted to sell the Vault Key back to Tannis. Once we get into Borderlands 2, we hear from Handsome Jack that he and Wilhelm found Tannis and “tortured her for hours” to get the Vault Key. We get more glimpses into her spiraling psychosis through more ECHO recorder missions like “Torture Chairs”.
What all of this informations adds up to, I can’t entirely say. We all know Tannis is a bit off, but maybe she will finally take the next steps in her obsession with the Vault in Borderlands 3, whatever those steps may be.
“Given the blank look on your face, I assume you have not completed your task.”

Okay guys, it’s settled. If I can get it done before Cincinnati Comic Expo, I’m gonna do Dr. Tannis cosplay instead of Bucky. I love Bucky, but if I do Tannis, then I won’t be stressing as much about makeup and stuff (like if I do Bucky, my arm gives me so much stress). If I don’t do Tannis, that’s fine, but I’m for sure gonna do it for a future con.
Jenn and I are gonna go shopping for it Saturday, and she’s gonna help me out with it bc she’s an angel. <3 <3 <3 And I don’t know how to cel shade, so she’s gonna teach me some stuff.
Poor Tannis probably has to put up with so much crap from the Vault Hunters. It’s hard enough for her just having a normal conversation, and that’s without Gaige turning HQ into a rave, Salvador arm wrestling with Axton over her research papers, Krieg stashing livers in the washing machines, and anything else that might happen on a daily basis. None of them even really realize that they’re upsetting her so much until one day she just goes off at them and flees Headquarters for a while and they have to go looking for her
