The Draccus

I FINALLY MANAGED TO UPLOAD IT! <3

Anyways. Here are the results of my bachelor thesis, on believable creature design, creating the draccus from Patrick Rothfuss’ novel The Name of the Wind. Thank you to everyone who helped me choose a silhouette back in December. It was a lot of work, but I like how it turned out! 

In the novel, the draccus is described as a ~6ft tall, huge black lizard who can breathe fire, has iron scales and eats trees. (And is also a drug addict...) While I had a LOT of thoughts on that topic and wrote 60 pages about them, here are my final results :) 

If you’re wondering why he looks like he just ate a tree... he totally did. It’s mostly because I only had time to create a very basic control rig (you know, to pose him) because I haven’t rigged a character in almost 3 years (I don’t like rigging), so my rig had no “throat controls” which is why he looks very round and happy when the mouth is closed. But I kind of think it’s cute :D

As already explained above, after creating the silhouette, I first modelled the skeleton and musculature before I did the final form, to ensure that it would be as believable as possible. 

Since there are basically no lizard anatomy charts ANYWHERE (apart from one of a green anole by Terryl Whitlatch from her schoolism course, which I screenshotted) I spent a lot of time cross-referencing the names of the muscles on her side view image with my animal anatomy reference book, and also google. (And this incredibly helpful art of Styracosaurus albertensis without which life would’ve been very hard. I just had to look elsewhere for the legs, because of the different poses) 

This meant that I literally googled the name of every single muscle and looked where it would attach in a human (or horse,...) to figure out its function and how it would have to work for the draccus. I’m so glad that we’re all tetrapods and that I could at least be fairly certain that the basic muscles exist in all of us, and that their functions would be the same in reptiles :D
