Robert Schober
I recently emailed Robert Schober (co-director of the “Na Na Na” video) and asked if he had any photos or stories to contribute. He generously sent me this response, as well as a couple of unpublished photos:
Hi Kaitlin,
Thanks for reaching out. I was hired on as the director to work with Gerard, but there are really so many people that shaped this video. While I did principle photography and the chase sequence and an unused performance/car setup with DP Larkin Seiple, the intro to the video and a few moments, including the showdown, were shot and directed by Nate Weaver (originally shot for the Danger Days album trailer, I believe). Claire Marie Vogel also shot the scene of them traveling through the dead zone, where you see a skeleton wearing a Black Parade Jacket. They are both great directors and you should follow up with them if you have a chance. It was a blast to work on and I’m happy about what I was able to contribute, but at the end of the day, this is very much Gerard’s video- the costumes, the characters, the vision of the world. I did have some fun adding a few little touches like the spy camera in the desert, which I built from an old polaroid camera and a lamp stand.
I’m enclosing some photos for you that you probably haven’t seen. One is me and Gerard talking during the last setup of the night at the campfire. The other is a closeup of the badge that Grant Morrison wore in the video. He signed it for me.
Also, fun fact, we were short an actor for one of the Draculoids in the elevator scene with Korse, so I am in costume on the right side of him in that scene. Also I’m the guy getting a poster shoved in his face.
Best,
R
