Tanzania to vote on new constitution in April 2015

Tanzania will hold a referendum in April 2015 on a new constitution, the government has announced, a move rejected by the opposition, who said Thursday that the drafting process ignored it. The opposition is angry because the draft constitution makes few major changes to the structure of government, claiming it has therefore rejected its calls for a strengthening of the federal system to limit presidential powers. "I can confirm April 30 as the date for referendum," Attorney General Frederick Werema said. Opposition lawmakers led by the Chadema party stormed out during debate on the draft, leaving discussion to the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, which has been in power since independence in 1961, and controls two-thirds of the assembly. CAIRO (Reuters) - Polls across Egypt closed on Wednesday evening, state media reported, after a second and final day of voting on a draft constitution that could pave the way for a presidential bid by army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Though voting passed off more peacefully than on Tuesday, when nine people were killed, officials said police arrested at least 79 people during protests by supporters of deposed President Mohamed Mursi, who was removed from power by Sisi in July. At least nine people were killed in confrontations between Muslim Brotherhood supporters and police, official sources said. Two small bombs went off, one in Cairo and one in the Nile Delta city of Mahalla, injuring no one. The Brotherhood, still backing Mursi who is now in jail, has called for a boycott and protests over the draft, which deletes Islamic language written into the basic law approved a year ago when he was still in office. At least five people were killed in confrontations between Muslim Brotherhood supporters and police, according to official sources, highlighting underlying tension in the country. The Brotherhood, backing Mursi who is now in prison, has called for a boycott and protests over the draft which deletes Islamist language written into the basic law approved a year ago under Mursi. The referendum is a milestone in the political transition plan the army-backed government has been implementing while pressing a fierce crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's best organised party until last year.
