Peculiar—yes. Insane—no.
Stieg Larsson, The Girl Who Played With Fire
Police officers always seem to be the most frustratingly useless and ignorant characters in literature, film and television. While I agree there are those in real life that are probably equally incompetent, I understand their importance and significance in reality. There are probably more who are amazing at their job and do so much for their communities. In fact, I'm sure there are majority of awesome police officers.
But in literature, film and television I dislike majority of them with a fiery passion. Case and point: the seemingly competent and obviously intelligent yet ignorant and oblivious police officers on the case in The Girl Who Played with Fire.
I'm currently in Chapter 14, Page 312 and I'm with Armansky and Blomkvist. There is no way in hell Lisbeth Salander committed the murders in this novel. No spoilers please. I want to finish it out unspoiled.
We've been shown the obvious culprits earlier on in the novel. While evidence may lead to her, there is absolutely no motive to link her to them.
So I'm standing by her until the novel may say otherwise, which I 100% doubt. And I don't think I ever been so defensive over a misunderstood character or so infuriated as I am by fictional police officers. Great writing indeed.

Files are one thing. People are something else.
Dragan Armansky, (from The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson)
Armansky felt so provoked by her [Lisbeth] lack of emotional response that sometimes he wanted to grab hold of her and shake her. To force his way into her shell and win her friendship, or at least her respect.
Dragan Armansky, (from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson)
He had regretted his decision to hire the girl [Lisbeth] the moment he met her. She did not just seem difficult - in his eyes she was the very quintessence of difficult. She had dropped out of school and had no sort of higher education.
