Okay so I've got a headcanon for ninjago dragons, this time for their vision.
As many of you know from school, animals see color with cones in their eyes that are each sensitive to a range of wavelengths of light. The amount and ranges of cones varies from creature to creature. Humans normally have 3, one mainly sensitive to blue, one mainly sensitive to green, and one mainly sensitive to amber/yellow, which is also what we see red with.
I made dragons to have 4 cones. One sensitive mainly to violet, also able to pick up UVA light and blue, one mainly sensitive to green, one mainly sensitive to yellow, and one mainly sensitive to red which can also perceive infra red light.
Here's a diagram I made to better visualize the way the color cones in a dragon's eye work, and below that a diagram I found online about how the human eye works, so you can compare:
The way they process color is also slightly different. Let's take one of the differences, the color magenta for an example.
We humans see magenta when we see lots of red and blue/violet at the same time. Normally, our brain interprets two very different colors by showing the color that would be at the wavelength that is the average of the two colors present. But with magenta, that average would be green. And since we have a very sensitive dedicated cone for green, our brain knows that magenta has no relation to green, so it creates magenta to still try to show that it's blue and red coming in at the same time.
Now while dragons also have a dedicated green cone, it's very insensitive compared to ours. Their brain will happily average magenta into green, a pure green they're actually unable to see if you present it to them as pure green due to the insensitive green cone.
So then what about pink?
Well pink forms very differently from magenta, even if it looks fairly similar to us. Magenta is pure red and pure blue/violet. Pink is pure red, some blue, and a bit of green. In that case for a dragon, there's no two absolutely different colors to take an average from, so their brain processes pink the same way as ours does, meaning that they see pink like we do.
This creates the interesting scenario that while a dragon may be neutral with pink, it is absolutely mesmerized by magenta. Pink is still that pale pink, but magenta is a beautiful vibrant green they're incapable of seeing any other way.
