What if the How to Train your Dragon Characters were pokemon trainers
Okay so one of my favorite games to play on Tumblr is to make pokemon teams for characters from non-pokemon cartoons. So since casting for the live action HTTYD movie came out, I have seen a lot of things on various website dash's and that has gotten me to revisit the parts of this media that I loved as a child. This has been very fun, and naturally I eventually decided to do pokemon teams for the HTTYD characters.
I do have a couple points about my lists that I want to adress before showing my picks. I am a person who really enjoys the cartoons (as in ROB/DOB/RTTE). The first movie is actually the only one I have fully seen, but I know what happens in the next 2 from my time in the fandoms (Rip Stoick). The main way this will effect my list is that I did not make a pokemon team for Eret Son Of Eret. I do not know enough about him to make him a full team of six. I know he becomes Skullcrusher's rider after Stoick dies. Druddigon is the pokemon I think best represents Skullcrusher. So Eret would have a Druddigon and five other pokemon that someone who knows him better can come up with. I did however make Pokemon teams for Heather and Dagur from the cartoons. I love both those characters (I wish they had made it into the third movie) and I wanted to include them. I also did one for Viggo Grimborn, because I wanted to make a villain team and think about how his team would match up in battle against Hiccups.
With Httyd characters covered let's go over some rules I followed for pokemon selection
1.) 1 gave each character a dragon type pokemon to represent their dragons.
2.) I do not like using legendary types on my lists because they are to powerful. Those would most likely be the godlike alpha dragons Hiccup and Toothless fight in the movies. Pseudo legionaries however can be used.
3.) On this list I excluded Mega dragons, because I ultimately used a non mega evolving dragon to be Toothless, and if Toothless cannot mega evolve then none of the teas dragons should be able to.
(edditing this rule because I have seen ZA's Mega Dragonite. I like it. Hiccup is now the only character on this list with a mega dragon pokemon. As he deserves to be)
4.) The groups main dragons all had to be dragon type pokemon, but some of them do have close relationships with background dragons, and due to the shortage of dragon pokemon I let background dragons be represented by other types.
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III
Shiny Dragonite: Okay I bounced between about three different choices on what pokemon would be the best representation for Toothless, before I finally decided to go with the original pseudo legendary Dragon himself. I feel this adds in Toothless's rarity, his speed, and heroic personality. I went with the shiny version because it is darker colored and Toothless is needs to be able to camouflage with the night.
Goomy: So my idea with this one was that Draonite would represent Movie Toothless and Goomy would Represent Book Toothless. Hiccup had two dragons in the books right? Goomy is a puny and weak looking dragon that is actually a baby version of another big and powerful dragon.
Accelgor: First off it is one of the fastest pokemon, and speed is one of Hiccups strengths. Secondly ninja's seen as unpredictable, which is also a strength of Hiccup's. Lastly it is connected to one of Astrid's pokemon, so it also connects to Hiccstrid.
Quailava & Tinkatuff: The Franchise's life on Dreamworks starts with Hiccup working as Gobber's apprentice and wanting to be more. What I like about that though is Hiccup wanting to do more does not equate him not liking Smith work, he just wants to do that plus more. He invents and builds so many fantastical devices to aid missions while leading the dragon riders. Quilava and Tinkatuff are his helpers in that. I am making them middle stages because that is a part of Hiccup's life that we see him growing in during the franchise and one I fully believe he continued to develop in post the franchise, so I cannot fully evolve them yet
Noctowl: This pokemon represents how wise and strategic Hiccup is in the way he devises plans and leads his team/people. Hiccup is Norse. The Norse associate Owls with wisdom in Norse mythology. Noctowl is known for being the wisest owl in pokemon, so its a perfect Brainy pokemon for Hiccup
Astrid Hofferson
Dragapult: Dragapult is one of the dragon pokemon I originally considered to use for Toothless due to its high level of Speed. However I did not use it there, and upon further reflection I think it is better representation for Stormfly. They are both very colorful dragons. It firing the Dreepy is the about the closest a dragon pokemon comes Stormfly's "spine shot", which was her primary attack in battle. Also in show verse Stormfly could fly faster than Toothless if she ate chicken
Escavalier: This is Astrids pokemon that goes with Hiccup's Accelgor. Astrid having Escavalier represents how she is the more traditional viking warrior to pair with Hiccups being a newer type of fighter. And the fact that Karrablast and Shelmet need each other to evolve into their finale forms shows how Astrid and Hiccup both helped the other grew into stronger/better versions of themselves through their relationship
Kleavor: Astrid's favorite weapon was always the ax, and Kleavor has one on each arm. It is also a very dangerous pokemon, that only a trainer who is both skilled and fearless would be able to train. Well Astrid is both those things! I feel like training Kleavor would be a personal challenge for her.
Grapploct: So its pretty obvious to me that the fighting type woudl be Astrid's favorite type of pokemon. I put a lot of thought into which fighting type pokemon would best suit Astrid. When she gets into hand-to-hand fights her strategy is usually to lock a grip onto her opponents limbs and twist or pull them in a way that causes her opponent to fall to to the ground. That matches Grapploct's method of fighting. Astrid and this pokemon could spar and take out many an enemy together
Timburr: Astrid also likes to build defense forces to keep the teams perimeters secure. Timburr is the perfect fighting type to help her do that. The only reason I am keeping it in its firs stage is that that is the stage where it carries wood around, and wood was the material Astrid used to build her defense systems
Doduo: Astrid canonically likes to get up at sunrise to began her day with some early morning training. I looked up if there was an "early bird pokemon." That was how I found out "early bird" is actually an ability that a handful of pokemon can use. Form that handful I decided to give Astrid a Doduo, because it's pokedex entries say that its heads sleep one-at-a-time and there for it is always on guard, just like our girl Astrid is.
Snotlout Jorgenson
Turtonator: Turtonator was an easy pick to represent Hookfang. A Dragon/fire type that is explosive to the touch. Trainers can also use its turds to set off explosions, which is similar to the explosions Snotlout was able to set off using the gel that secreted from Hookfangs scales
Scrafty: Fire types would likely be Snotlout's favorite type. But he would have at least one fighting type. Scrafty is the perfect fighting type for Snotlout. It's a Hoodlum. It's ridiculous looking. It's rude and short tempered. But underneath all that it really loves those it considers its friends and family, and will go to any lengths to take care of them. That is Snotlout to a T.
Cubcachoo: The easy and simple reason I chose Cubcachoo for Snotlout is that it is snotty. The longer and more complex reason is that it is to represent his softer side. Hookfang loved watching baby dragons, and Snotlout over time comes to care about eggs/young dragons just as much. I could see Turtonator (Hookfang in this) and Snotlout coming across a little baby Cubcachoo some night. Snotlout thinks it has a bad cold, and decides to take it back with them to help get better. Then by the time Hiccup or Fishlegs can tell him " It's not sick, that is how Cubcachoo is supposed to look"... Well Snotlout and his team have already bonded with the little Cubcachoo so it has to stay.
Centiskorch: This represents the Fireworms/Fireworm Queen and the close bond Snotlout and Hookfang have with a colony of that particular type of dragon in both DOB and RTTE.
Buffalant: Both Snotlout and Buffalant are brawny creatures that like to charge head first at opponents, so Buffalant fits him that regard. Also in one of the cartoons a script writer references this really dumb former nickelodeon show twice, by having Snotlout name one of his family's yak's Yakidy, and Yakidy being his favorite Yak. I looked up "Yak pokemon" and Buffalant came up as the closest thing.
Tarountula: This one is meant to be Snotlout's relationship with his parents. RTTE lists sewing as a special skill of Snotlout's. He says his mom taught how, and since he writes to his mom frequently he will probably brag to her about using that skill to make armor for the dragons. Tarountula also evolves into Spidos, a trap making/laying spider pokemon. Trap design and execution is a special skill of Spitelout's that Snotlout admires. I imagine that Spitelout would have a Spidos and try to push his son to hurry up and evolve Traountula. But according to comics Snotlout is actually has a touch of arachnophobia. I think he would be okay with Traountula since its body is mostly a cute little ball of twine. but Spidos is maybe a little to scary. So Snotlout would be torn between wanting to evolve his pokemon to get better at trapping and make his dad proud, and also maybe not wanting his little buddy to change how it is now.
Fishlegs Ingerman
Haxorus: This is Meatlug. Haxorus are definitely tougher than gronkles, but they have territorial yet friendly temperaments and eat minerals, which is gronkle like
Dubwool: Dubwool is strong, round, and soft, just like fishlegs
Oranguru: In their group if Hiccup is the one with wisdom and strategy expertise, then Fishlegs has the book smart intelligence and research skills. I would say that Oranguru is a really good pokemon to represent that, and it would make a great member of Fishlegs team. Both Oranguru and Fishlegs are very intelligent and kinda sage like
Donphan & Gravelor: Fishlegs loves everything to with the boulder class. In pokemon that could translate into either the ground type or the rock type. So to cover my bases I made sure to give Fishlegs one of each. I picked Donphan and Gravelor because both of them are pretty easy going, but fight by tackling and rolling. THis mirrors the exact strategies Fishlegs taught to Meatlug and other boulder class dragons
Togetic: Fishlegs at his core is just a softhearted guy who wants to live in harmony. He is exactly the kind of person who a Togetic would bond with and want as a trainer
Ruffnut Thorston
Zweilous: The two headed hydra. Shared with Tuffnut. I would have loved to fully evolved it up into Hydreigon, but Barf & Belch only have two heads not three, so I had to leave it in its mid-stage evolution
Gyarados: This is in part my apology to Ruffnut for not making Zewilous fully evolved. The second part is to represent Scauldy, a scauldraon Ruffnut bonds with and trains in DOB. Normally not even Hiccup could train a scauldraon, but Ruffnut's fish smelling hair reminded Scauldy of his home, and Ruffnut was able to use that to do what Hicccup couldn't. According to the HTTYD game Ruffnut and Scauldy remained friends even after that episode and Ruffnut still see's him when he swims through Berk's area.
Stuntank: As mentioned above Ruffnut shows time and time again that she really likes strong and pungent smells. So it only makes sens e that she would want/love owning a skunk pokemon
Machoke: Girl has the most extensive list of suitors pursuing her out of any character, and she does not always enjoy this. Anybody seen that meme of the girl walking out of a building, some guy seeing her and deciding to go after her, only to be held back by another guy, who's a friend of the girls and is looking at him like "Nope not today". Yeah Ruffnut has Machoke to be that friend, and make her suitors leave her alone when she is not up for dealing with them.
Purrloin: Ruffnut and Purrlion are a accomplished theiving partnership. They have stolen much from their enemies, and sometimes from their fellow riders
Chatot: This one helps Ruffnut talk her way out of situations. Usually they both just annoy people until they are ready to confess anything or just run away from their noise.
Tuffnut Thorston
Zweilous: The two headed hydra. Shared with Ruffnut. I would have loved to fully evolved it up into Hydreigon, but Barf & Belch only have two heads not three, so I had to leave it in its mid-stage evolution
Flechinder: It is completely unfair of me to add a pokemon to represent Scauldy and then not add one for Torch. Flechinder's line has large wings that can scatter embers when in fly's, so it is the closest pokemon I could find. I am keeping it mid evolution because it does not seem fair to make Torch a higher level than Belch.
Grimsnarl: Here s my apology to Tuffnut for not making Zweilous fully evolved. Grimsnarl is a 3rd evolution trickster pokemon, very Loki. It also loves to wrestle/fight with Machamp, so we have Ruff an Touff's rivalry representation, to go with Zweilous representing their closeness
Ferrothorn: It's a mace pokemon and maces are Tuffnut's weapon of choice
Torchick: To represent Tuffnut's famous pet chicken: Chicken. I do not care if Tuffnut marries or not in the future. Let our boy be Berk's egg man and chicken breeder.
Piloswine: Boar wrestling in the boar pit. Pignite was out because then Tuff would have 3 fire types ( Tuff might like that but Hiccup does not have time to put out that many fires). Piloswine is tough, adds to new types to Tuff's team, and looks the most like the viking's era boars.
Now the Next 3 characters are cartoon exclusives. If you have no interest in the cartoons then stop here and thank you for looking at my post
Dagur the Deranged
Dracovish: So Dracovish is probably Dagur's 6th pokemon, but I am putting first in line with the order I did for previous characters. Dagur had two dragons in RTTE: Shattermaster and Sleuther. I gave him Dracovish because I feel like it can embody both Shattermaster's silliness and Sleuther's ferocity
Annhilape: Take its power level, its rage, and its skills with its fists Annhilape is truly Beserker pokemon worthy of a chief
Dewott: So I really wanted to have one of Dagur's pokemon connect to one of Hiccups given their relationship and the evolution of why Dagur calls Hiccup "Brother". But most of Hiccup's pokemon were already connected to Astrid or Viggo. But then I remembered that Cyndiqual's line is also a Hisuin Starter, along with Rowlett and Oshowatt. Hiccup has a Quilava so I decided to give Dagur Dewott. Dewott trains hard, is skilled with weapons, and it has a type advantage against Quilava. This is to represent how when they were at war with each other Dagur seemed to have every physical advantage against Hiccup, and Hiccup could only take him down by being very clever.
Krandos: It is a hardheaded, headstrong, offense style dinosaur pokemon. its a counterpart to his sister Heather's Sheildon.
Nuzleaf: This one represents the start of Dagur's redemption/change. Because on one hand Nuzleaf is a scary dark type pokemon that plays ominous music meant to create feelings of unease and fright in people. But on the other hand this is also a cool little grass type pokemon that knows few nice melodies that can be played to comfort people it likes.
Meditie: This would be the fifth one Dagur caught (Remember Dracovish would actually be his finale team mate) When Dagur turns up again after months adrift now in control of his temper and at peace, he is shown to have taken up meditation as a forum of self-care. I am going to say that this Meditie taught Dagur meditation. Dagur caught it afterwards, and now they do it together back on Beserker Island.
Heather the Unhinged
Kommo-o: Kommo-o is representative of Windshier. The typing fights, as does the sharp class passing design. The fact that like Windsheir and Heather Kommo-o is a drifter who likes to stay on the fringes of groups. All of this makes Kommo-o the perfect choice for Windshier
Scizor: A branch evolution to Astrid's Kleavor; Representative of the close friendship the pair have. I imagine they would battle with these two a lot during training/while Heather is undercover, and probably do double battles when Heather is living as part of the rider team
Dartrix: Hey now if I gave Dagur a Dewott because to go with Hiccup's Quailave, then it is only fair that I complete the triad by giving Heather a Dartix. This ends working out the 3's dynamic pretty well: Dagur has the type advantage over Hiccup, so Hiccup has to out strategy Dagur if he hopes to beat Dagur. Hiccup has the type advantage over Heather. Heather is a trickster by nature, but Hiccup can always figure her tricks out. Heather has they type advantage against Dagur. Heather is the chink to Dagur's armor. When she allied with the Hiccup and the Dragon Riders Dagur gave up his war against them
Sheildon: Because Heather is a very guarded person, an the more defensive Beserker when compared to her more hurtle-forward-head-first brother.
Keleon: Heather is a very sneaky person who likes to go undercover and steal information. Keleon helps her listen in on that information or swipe plans from the other side.
Galarian Meowth: Galarian Meowth and its evolution Persurker are meant to be Berserker versions of Meowth and Persion. Heather's gets one when she moves back to Berserker Island to live with Dagur and learn more about her birth culture.
Viggo Grimborn
Kingdra: Its the rival and opposite Pokemon to Dragonite (Toothless) and represents how Viggo was the "Mirror Villain" of Hiccup and Toothless. Also some of Viggo's best plans involve water dragons such as "the Submaripper" and "The Shellfire"
Galarian Weezing: Viggo's primary weapons are all laced with Dragon root, a plant poisonous to dragons. Since Fairy types have a type advantage against dragon types, I wanted to give Viggo a dual poison/fairy type pokemon. Galarian Weezing was the pokemon I foudn with that typing.
Croviknight: Well firstly I needed a really intelligent pokemon that was not Slowking or Noctowl. Croviknight is dark, brilliant, and resourceful. Viggo was a genius, who had more tools than Hiccup and basically started a war with him because he was happy to have clever opponent to battle against. Croviknight is also preyed on by Tinkaton. Hiccup's Tinkatuff is one evolution away from being a Tinkaton. Viggio knew very well that Hiccup would surpass him one day, and wanted to end Hiccup before that day came
Golurk, Bisharp & Pawinards: These three are represent a rook, a bishop, and a pawn. Three chess pieces. Viggo is a big fan of a board game called Masses and Talons, which is basically this worlds version of chess. His favorite way to send invitations was by leaving broken or marching game pieces for his enemy to find
