Tbh... not a huge fan. I want to like him because he's a father figure to Merlin. But also I don't think he was a particularly good father figure.
Also his wig was weird looking.

Right, yes, ghost Uther–well, there’s this awful old man from the Lower Town, I won’t get into it all here, but to make a long story very short, he turned out to be a necromancer, and he called up Uther’s spirit to–I don’t actually know, I think he’d gone a bit ’round the twist, actually, he just really wanted to cause chaos, I’m not sure he had a real plan.
But Uther’s spirit is back on the other side, and I…I handled the old man.

Okay okay you have asked for reveal fics so i SHALL PROVIDE!!!! I did recently post some fic recs here, and quite a few of them are reveals!!! I believe I actually mention in the post which ones are reveals and which ones aren’t, so hopefully, you’ll find something there to your taste!!
But let me see if I can’t find some fics with more of an emphasis on the magic for you!!
Inquire Within by RedBarchetta
Post-S4, in-progress, and only two chapters so far, but I’m willing to bet there’s plenty more to come, and I honestly just can’t recommend this one enough. Even before Arthur finds out about Merlin’s magic, it’s obvious they stand on equal ground, and the difference in their relationship here, in comparison to the one in canon, is honestly just striking. And Merlin chooses to tell Arthur about his magic - that’s right, no forced-by-extenuating-circumstances - so that’s really a refreshing take!! And oh, I adore the portrayal of Merlin in this one, we get a few fleeting glimpses here and there of the innocence he lost over the course of the series.

The Worst Way by Revhead
Mid-S4, complete, picks up right where 4x08 left off - actually slightly AU, if we’re being honest, as in this fic, the knights were far crueler and more violent toward Merlin than they were in the canon episode - and originally a one-shot that got extended into a full-fledged multi-chapter, so shit gets real right from the first chapter. The premise is essentially that Arthur finds out about Merlin’s magic in the worst way possible, as the title suggests - in other words, Merlin loses control of his powers briefly, and accidentally attacks Arthur. I told you shit got real.
Warnings for PTSD and implied/referenced physical abuse, as well as heavy physical and mental torture in later chapters.
The Lost by Ultra-Geek
Post-S3, complete, and I haven’t reread this one in a SUPER long time, I just haven’t had the time to settle back in and give it another go, but something happens that makes Merlin lose his memory - I honestly can’t remember now if it’s just the sheer psychological trauma, or some sort of magic, or a glitch with his own magic, but it definitely happens at some point, and he forgets Arthur knows about his magic, and I distinctly remember there’s a lot of Gwaine and Lancelot being protective of Merlin and supporting him unconditionally and just being good friends to him in general so. IT’S REALLY GOOD OKAY IM SORRY IM NOT SELLING IT THAT WELL IT’S BEEN SO LONG SINCE I READ IT.

Mid-S4, complete, picks up right after 4x06, and I thought I was in for a typical de-aged!Merlin fic. I WAS NOT. I WAS REALLY FUCKING NOT. Shit is so REAL, and Arthur actually gets his head on straight and realizes Agravaine is a LYING SNAKE, so go Arthur, basically, and Merlin’s actually only a child for about eight chapters or so, and the fic itself comprises twenty-four chapters in total, so we get PLENTY of our Merlin as well!! Arthur and Merlin are the Softest Boys and I’d die for them.
Warnings for violence and character death and also poor child Merlin gets scared a lot.
In a Heartbeat by 1917farmgirl
Mid-S4, one-shot, and ARTHUR AND MERLIN ARE THE SOFTEST BOYS AGAIN, and Agravaine is a SLIMY SNAKE UGH I HATE and Merlin is TRYING his BEST. Merlin is STRESSED, DEPRESSED, and IN NEED OF SOME REST. Let him sleep!!!
Warnings for torture, also Merlin definitely gets whipped at some point.

Post or mid-S4, multi-chapter, complete, another one that I haven’t had time sit down and reread for literal YEARS now, but no less amazing for that!!! Merlin and Arthur get captured by someone who KNOWS about Merlin’s magic and I distinctly remember they threaten to kill Arthur unless he willingly lets them bind his magic and IT’S SO GOOD because Arthur has NO IDEA what’s happening and the magic-binding causes Merlin IMMENSE PAIN omg it’s WONDERFUL the whump is just???? off the charts???? Arthur tries. so hard. meanwhile Merlin is beautiful and the only sane man. it’s incredible.
