But - and this is a slightly cheating answer - I had one of my Big Thoughts over the summer and it started because I was fed up with feeling like I had to constantly prune my books and look for ones to throw out (and here I have to go on a whole disclaimer tangent about how yes it can be good to keep your possessions to a manageable number, and I'm not advocating for us all to be hoarders, etc etc). Anyway, after a lot of internal ranting and being generally very annoyed, I somehow wound up with the thought that actually, they all contribute in a tiny way to the person you are now. And so do all the things you like.

So my first magical realism fic was ‘When Magic Happens’ and Jakes realised Morse had magic because it kept bopping about, basically. In this realm, imagine magic as a kind of pet - it can be curled up on your feet, it might be jumping up excitedly at the cigarette-smoking sergeant you (love to) hate.
In the second instalment, Morse isn’t as in control of his magic as he should be, because for once in his life, reading a book has not helped. A snippet (Jakes POV):
His senses tingle. A threat, huge, uncontrolled - and he lets his magic pounce without thought because the threat is magic too and that means the rest of them are sitting ducks, it’s up to him -
It’s instinct.
But it’s also Morse, he realises, or his magic anyway - bucking and fighting under his own and it had been about to go nuclear, which he understands on a visceral level when he follows Morse’s gaze to the little shoe with the broken buckle. Except the last thing they need is more destruction and that’s all there is to Morse’s magic now - wild fury -
It’s only after those first few seconds - after his magic has wrestled Morse’s and is holding it down - that he realises how intrusive this is. It’s like he turned around and tackled Morse and won’t let him go, grinding his face in the mud - but worse because this is their magics; it’s instinctive, it's personal, and he’s just tangled them up in each other and forced Morse down.
He can’t let go. Because if he does, he’s releasing all that energy and he reacted this way for a reason, and that reason is he thinks Oxford looks better standing.
And another little bit I couldn’t resist from later on:
“You were right,” says Morse.
It’s enough to make him double take.
“‘Course I was.” They stare at each other for a second. “What about specifically, this time?”

Oh it’s my Something You Somehow Haven’t To Deserve Series - where Morse was a Thursday all along, only magic let his family forget it. Yes, we’re talking Robbie Lewis and in this case, he’s Sergeant to a still very much magical DCI Endeavour Thursday :D
Robbie was the third Sergeant assigned to DCI Thursday within a year, and he’d quickly realized that, as opposed to station gossip, this was not due to said DCI’s duties as the Chairman of the Council, or the magic and the madness and the mayhem and everything that came with it.
No, he rather suspected that his two predecessors (and several others before them) begging to be reassigned had to do with certain other factors.
For example, he didn’t just work for one DCI.
Oh no, there was DCI Jakes to consider, as well. And God help you if you didn’t tell him what he wanted to hear – which mainly consisted of where “Dev” was and what he was doing.
Robbie had learned that one the hard way on his first week on the job, when the DCI he’d so far only seen fleetingly had strolled into his and DCI’s Thursday’s office as if he owned the place (only a slight exaggeration and vice versa, as it turned out) and demanded to be given details of their case. Robbie naturally had tried to stay as polite if vague as possible, which had led to a dressing-down by his new governor an hour later.

YAS 🙌🏼 I'm so glad to hear that! That book is truly a delight and I wish everyone would read it. It's so fun and tropey and lighthearted, and yet has surprising depth? Like that scene at Oliver's parents' party? I felt that in my BONES. In fact generally that secondary theme of parents being shitty and it's ok not to forgive them was like a breath of fresh air in my lungs. Not to mention the tenderness! The warmth! The emotional maturity! The social awareness! It feels weird to say but I've never felt so safe reading a book before. Like it tackles some tricky topics but I never felt like I was going to be left devastated and/or annoyed. The author didn't even do the thing where they only describe non-white characters' skin color, which is frankly a shocker (but a nice one obvs!) I JUST LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH
