Did we ever get an in-game lore explanation for where dragonsplague comes from or why pawns get it and turn into a Dragon specifically?

I get that it has to do with pawns being possessed by a dragon and getting a will of their own, (but I'm not sure whether it's THEIR WILL developing too fast or the will of a dragon possessing them).
