Serbia

General Information Serbia is a country in the Balkans, in South Eastern Europe. The area has been inhabited mainly by Southern Slavs for over 1.000 years, with the medieval state of Raška being the main predecessor of modern Serbia. From the 14th century, the Ottoman Empire increasingly gained influence. 1804 - 1835 was the era of the Serbian revolution. In 1878, Serbian independence was recognized. After World War I, several Balkan countries united into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, which then after World War II was converted into a socialist republic. In the early 1990s, the one-party system was disestablished and Yugoslavia fell apart. The 1990s were marked by ethnic tensions and wars in the region. From 1992 to 2006 Serbia and Montenegro still formed a united country, up to the independence of Montenegro through a referendum. Today, over 80% of inhabitants identify as ethnic Serbs, others are mainly of other Balkan ethnicities. 84% are Orthodox Christians. The capital is Belgrade.

Povlen stones The hills of Povlen in Serbia are famous for their large, round stones. They’ve been surrounded by mystery, there are legends about them having been created by aliens, being able to fulfill wishes, and more. According to scientists, they’re likely of volcanic origin.

Economy The economy of Serbia is a service-based upper middle income economy in Central Europe, with the tertiary sector accounting for two-thirds of total gross domestic product. The economy functions on the principles of the free market. Nominal GDP in 2022 is projected to reach $9,561 per capita. The strongest sectors of Serbia's economy are energy, the automotive industry, machinery, mining, and agriculture. The country's primary industrial exports are automobiles, base metals, furniture, food processing, machinery, chemicals, sugar, tires, clothes, and pharmaceuticals. Trade plays a major role in Serbian economic output. The main trading partners are Germany, Italy, Russia, and China.

Belgrade Belgrade, a city of very tumultuous history, is one of the oldest cities in Europe. Its history lasts a full 7,000 years. The area around two great rivers, the Sava and the Danube has been inhabited as early as the paleolithic period. One of the most important prehistoric cultures of Europe, the Vinča culture, evolved within the Belgrade area in the 6th millennium BC. In antiquity, Thraco-Dacians inhabited the region and, after 279 BC, Celts settled the city, naming it Singidūn. It was conquered by the Romans under the reign of Augustus and awarded Roman city rights in the mid-2nd century. It was settled by the Slavs in the 520s, and changed hands several times between the Byzantine Empire, the Frankish Empire, the Bulgarian Empire, and the Kingdom of Hungary before it became the seat of the Serbian king Stefan Dragutin in 1284.
