Today's wasp of the day is Cleptes semiauratus!

Like an oil slick, this wasp changes colors at every shift of the light. The sexual dimorphism of this wasp is even color based: males are typically more of a deep blue or green while the females have a red base that shifts from gold and green to even flashes of purple. The rainbow of iridescence varies with each individual and some will even have spots of colors where they're lighter, darker, or less vibrant.

Today's wasp of the day is Cratomus megacephala!

"mega-cephala" means "big head" but what that leaves out is that said big head is also shaped like a human thyroid. And what benefit is there to having a bow tie shaped noggin? Well, it's theorized that those little nubbins are what help this wasp push their way through their cocoon (and host) when they're done with their pupa nap.

Today's wasp of the day is Louis's club-horned cuckoo wasp (Sapyga louisi)!

Don't get confused; these are not cuckoo wasps as in wasps of the superfamily Chrysidoidea, but rather a cousin wasp from the superfamily Pompiloidea who just so happens to have the same brood parasite behavior.

The Louis in question that this wasp was named in honor of was the father of the researcher who was the first to describe this species. The researcher, Karl V. Krombein, credited his father for inspiring his love of insects. Without that love and inspiration, we would not have the contributions to the understanding of hymenoptera that Krombein provided throughout his career as an entomologist at the US National Museum of Natural History.

Today's wasp of the day is Ropalidia jemmae!

You may remember the extra green green wasp Ropalidia saussurei. Now, its close relative Ropalidia jemmae may only have a touch of green on their bodies, but what makes them special is their architectural talent. Wasps within Ropalidia have quite a range in styles when it comes to how each species constructs their paper nests. Many, like our beloved greenie R. saussurei, decide to play it discrete and camouflage their nest by using lichen to have it blend in with the tree. R. jemmae gets extra crafty by flipping their nest around so that the open cells face the tree instead of out. This is extra costly both resource and time wise but provides shield-like protection and effectively mimics the look of lichen, hiding the nest in plain sight

A small wasp quietly and gently inspecting the leaves of a maple tree in the evening light. This individual was likely beginning to wind down for the day, hence why it stopped long enough for pictures. I assume, based on this wasp's appearance, it was searching the leaves for caterpillars to paralyze. Being so slow-moving and juicy, caterpillars are quite the convenient food source for baby wasps!
