Gesture and Organizational Line Drawing

Dear Class, Your Online Journal assignment over the holiday weekend is to do gesture and organizational line drawings.

Process:

Choose 10 objects from around your home that you find visually interesting.

Complete 3 gesture drawings (line gesture, mass gesture, mass/line gesture) and 1 organizational line drawing of each. (4 drawings total of each object)

  Try to fit the four drawings on each sheet of newsprint (some parts may overlap), You are welcome to play with perspective and different views for each drawing.

  When you are finished with all 40 drawings, take a few minutes to review your work.  Choose the three that you think are the best. 

  Write a short paragraph (approx. 100 words) about why you chose these 3 drawings. 

This will help you describe verbally what you are seeing in your drawings. 

  Post the 3 images and paragraph on your online journal, then post the url on blackboard.  Due before 4:30pm on Wed, Jan 22, 2014.

Great article about learning to draw. I say this in class everyday but here it is out with some scientific research behind it. "Based on their research, the psychologists recommended the following techniques for getting better at drawing: Focus on scaling a drawing to fit the size of the paper; anchor an object in its surroundings by showing how it sits in space; focus on the distance between elements of the object and on their relative sizes; and focus on the size and shape of "negative space," or the empty space between parts of the object. Lastly, they recommend thinking of "lines" as what they really are — boundaries between light and dark areas."
