The word sounded foreign to Jude in his voice, a rumbling growl that rarely emerged from Finn. It showed a glimpse as to what he was, the danger that lurked beneath. Jude straightened up and liquid gold met glaciers as their eyes locked.
"Why." A fleeting look of surprise, shown only by a slight narrowing of his eyes, crossed his face. She challenged him frequently, playful banter or small arguments that typically ended in tangled sheets. This was different, they could both feel it.
Finn's tongue fiddled with the point of his fang as he thought carefully about his next choice of words.
He couldn't focus on one thought from his Huntress. They were all crowded together, a caucophany of emotions: love, exasperation, anger, yearning. It was too much to weave through.
"I can't put you through that." Their eyes ever strayed from the other's. They stood, three feet apart, the space between roiling with the raw emotion emitting from both of them. "I refuse to hurt you. I never want to turn someone again."
Jude grit her teeth, a bitter and breathy laugh coming out her nose and she turned away and paced a few steps.
"Of all the things you are, Finnegan, selfish is not something I'd take you for." Her voice was cold, deadly; where he showed force she brought it in equal measure. They were fire and ice, two opposite forces colliding.
Finn snarled. "What? Selfish? I'm saving you, Jude, don't you understand--"
Jude stomped towards him. "Don't understand what? You're saving me? From what exactly? Heartbreak? Pain? Loss? I can see where you're coming from, but you're wrong. You're doing the opposite." She ran a hand through her blond hair, exasperated.
"You stand here, a watcher of Lunaris, a keeper of time. Falling into step with those you deem worthy and disappearing again, perpetually putting yourself through a cycle of star crossed romance and pain. And you assume every ending is a burden and hardship of yours to bear." A tender look crossed her face and Jude stepped forward, reaching up to brush away hair from his brow gently. He was devastating to look at. Gorgeous, loving, and deep; a combination Jude found brought her returning to his door night after night. The pain in his eyes was clear, and her heart panged to see him that way.
"I am yours, forever, Finn," she said quietly. "I choose you. There will be no other. But I cannot sit idly by as the passage of time ravages me and you remain."
An iron hand took hers and pressed it against his cheek, tortured pain in his golden eyes.
"I don't care about you aging. You're perfect, no matter what age--" Jude cut him off again.
"I am yours," she repeated. "But you're only seeing things from your point of view." She closed the remaining gap between them, her free hand spreading over the spot where his stilled heart lie.
"You are mine." Though spoken quietly, the words rang out in the catacomb, clear as a bell. "And I refuse to become a picture for your memory box. To perpetuate that cycle." She took a shaky breath. "I can't put you through that."
The air stilled between them, their faces inches apart. This was usually the point where their fights devolved into something more enjoyable, and in the stretched seconds it seemed that was the case again. Jude pushed up onto her toes and Finn's eyes fluttered closed, expecting the crash of lips and teeth and tongue.
Instead, there was simply. a chaste kiss on his jaw.
"Think on it," she whispered into his ear. She pressed her forehead to the spot where she just pressed her lips before she turned on her heel, into the fog to start the day.
