Hey, so i started this blog because i'm an avid tumblr user, i'm obsessed with it. See shitlesbianslove.tumblr.com for my other stuff but anyway i wanted to be able to document my dreadlock journey someway and decided that this was the best outlet..
In august last year I started becoming interested in dreadlocks thanks to watching the amazing Whitney Mixter from the Real L word...
I was in love with the show and her and her style and most of all her dreadlocks.. I decided to put a couple of dreadlocks in my hair and see what it was like, how they would take to my hair, tried to learn how to maintain even though it was easy just having 1 so wasn't a true representation of having a whole head of dreadlocks. So anyway, i had 2 dreadlocks, and I left them in for around 5 months, went on holiday so they were exposed to sea salt water, i looked at loads of Youtube videos, bought beads, a crochet hook and learnt how to crochet them and palm roll and overall did lots of research about having dreads. With these dreads I blunted the ends after about 2 months and within a couple of weeks they had both shrunk significantly and one became very short and fat. I didn't like the way they look anymore so I took them out in January. This was an arduous process and even just having 2 locs, it took me a good couple of hours and a hell of a lot of conditioner to brush them out. Nevertheless.. I managed it. I wanted to prove to a lot of the dreadlock haters out there that you don't have to shave your hair off to get rid of dreadlocks, yes its hard work, yes it hurts a little, but it is possible to get them out and get back natural undamaged hair (providing you care for it while its locked up)
Anyway, then in March I started thinking about how I missed those two baby dreads, and I was trawling through the tumblr dreadlock tag everyday obsessing over girls with dreads. So i decided to dread the entire bottom half of my head. I have quite a lot of thick hair so I figured I would leave some 'normal' hair on top and having seen some girls with a half head of dreads on Youtube and loving their style I went ahead. I sectioned my hair, in what i thought was properly sectioned and I used the twist and rip method. I created 14 dreadlocks, mostly quite thin ones although I do have one which is a lot thicker than the others, and one which is tiny tiny thin and hardly a dreadlock at all! After a few weeks I realised that my sectioning was not the best as I did have some loose hair at the top of a couple of dreads trying to marry each other but i pulled the loose hairs apart, which hurt a little, and crocheted the top loose hairs to make them tighter. This seems to have worked as the marrying doesn't seem to be happening as badly since.
My dreads are now around 8 weeks old, and I have been maintaining them with a little bit of palm rolling, and crocheting around every 1-2 weeks. I would prefer to have quite neat uniform dreadlocks due to work and needing to look professional but I don't want to obsess about bumps and loose hair and crochet them too much as I know they'll get weak. I have been washing my hair with normal Herbal Essences shampoo every 2-3 days but recently have decided to try and use the baking soda and lemon juice washing method as I've heard its good for a really deep cleanse. Plus, I'm kind of trying to move away from washing with expensive products which are full of chemicals and crap because i'm starting to realise they are unnecessary and really just producing more oil in my hair.
Anyway this is just the start of my journey and i will try to update with pics and also some Youtube videos so feel free to check those out at 'Melody 17'. I only have one video so far but I intend to upload more when I have some interesting shit to talk about!
