Dry Rations: Fruit Leather
Preserving fruit as a puree dried into strips is an easy way to make a standardized product out of decidedly nonstandard foods- fruits have a way of being all sorts of shapes and levels of sweetness. Clan Kelmar'e's fruit leather is typically made of a blend of apples and varos (peaches), with ginger, garam masala, and cinnamon flavoring the puree.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup peaches, peeled and diced
- 1 1/2 cups apples, peeled and diced.
- Ginger, cinnamon, and garam masala, to taste
- Salt
- Brown sugar, to taste
To start, preheat your oven to 180 degrees Fahrenheit, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Then gently warm the fruit, sugar, and spices in a pot on the stove.
The idea here is to basically make applesauce. Want to know a secret? You can skip this step entirely and just use premade applesauce. Either way, once the fruit has cooked down, mash or blend it into a thick puree. Taste now, and adjust the sweetness and spices if needed
Spread the puree as evenly as you can on the baking sheet, then set it in the oven and dehydrate for three hours. After that, check the sheet for sticky or wet spots and keep drying in fifteen or twenty minute intervals until it's no longer sticky. Pull it out, let it cool, and use scissors to cut it (paper and all!) into strips for storage.
