The anbaric flickered above her head - - a surge in electricity somewhere - - except here is wasn’t anbaric, perhaps another word was used here ?
Boreal wasn’t the first, to enter oxford from another window to another world, nor was he the last, as the shimmering undeterred behind her as she stepped through. At the age of fifty, she would one day be caught up in something that wasn’t yet established -the General Oblation Board, to determine the SANITY of the children who had been cut. This, for her would start a cataclysm of events that would ultimately lead to her death, but the back she had turned on her people, the gyptians, would embrace her once again when the neutrality of her alliance went against all Marisa Coulter believed in.
But that wasn’t here or now, it would be a solid thirty or so years until that happened, now she had a fight on her hands for an education, a doctorate in a world that didn’t believe women should be allowed the same RIGHTS as men it angered her, as she followed a young Boreal, a student at the same university with his no-it-all smile and his ridiculous nickname for her ‘water rat’.
Except, perhaps someday, she would say she lost him on purpose, distracted by the chaos this world brought. The multicoloured lights in shop windows (television sets playing top of the pops) , the smells wafting from restaurants and the way in which people moved FREELY, carelessly, unaffected by the black cloud the magisterium enveloped over the world. her world

@drmalone sent: “ it’s okay to be angry, you’re allowed to be upset about what happened to you. ”
It might have been the first time anyone had validated her feelings quite so readily in a long time. Sure, Dr. Malone did not yet know the half of what she had been through; the losses, the betrayals, the life-threatening experiences, but even so, her words soothed the ache slightly. Lyra trusted Mary as much as she could possibly trust another being after all that had happened. Will, she trusted also, but it was easier with him, he was a child as well. Mary was an adult and adults could not always be relied on. Still, the alethiometer believed in the scholar and Lyra believed in it. Though, when the woman spoke so warmly, so kindly, Lyra was not so sure she needed to consult it at all.
“I s’pose... It jus’ don’t feel good. I don’t wanna be angry and upset forever. I wanna be happy, but so much bad stuff has happened an’ keeps happenin’.” Lyra shrugged, an attempt to downplay her emotions as she so often now felt she should. “I don’t even understand what I’m feelin’ half the time, I just know it en’t often good... I’m so tired.” She had hardly eaten nor slept well since leaving the Gyptians what felt like years ago. As independent a preteen as Lyra was, looking after herself had dropped low on her mental list of priorities and she felt exhausted.
