The scorching heat of his stare made your mouth snap shut immediately, and even though he didn’t raise his voice that was somehow worse. You felt like a kid caught with your hand in the cookie jar—simultaneously berated, guilty and angry all at once.
Because behind that cool, painstakingly collected demeanour of his, you saw something that was a shade of concern; almost tangible. By now, you knew better than to expect him to admit to it though.
“Thought? There must have been very little thought put into something as foolish as what you just did,” he cut you off, his tone still calm, calm, calm but his eyes— “Do you have any idea what would have happened if you got stuck? You would have gotten lost forever. Death would have been a kindness in comparison to what awaited you there.”
“I’m sorry, okay? I messed up, I’m an idiot,” you snapped shakily, feeling an almost acidic sting at the back of your throat as a weight burned behind your eyes. Why were you always such a disappointment to him? “I just wanted to show you I could control the mirror dimension t-too. I told you I could never be your—your apprentice—I’m—”
I’m not good enough.
Not before, and certainly not now.
Stephen kept insisting you had the raw talent very few ever possed but you couldn’t see it. You were just…you. One step out of sync with the world. He kept telling you that it was that tip of the axis that made you special, powerful. This proved otherwise.
“What are you—stop it!”
You tried to blink the tears out of your eyes, hearing the shuffle of shoes being dragged across the floor before a warm, soft material sudden half wrapped around your arm, dragging Stephen into your line of sight. The Cloak of Levitation had an odd sentience around it that you usually loved, if only because it always seemed to take your side if you and Stephen got into an argument.
The man in front of you huffed, swatting his fingers at the cloak that did the exact same in reply. And when Stephen’s bright, keen eyes finally turned in your direction his stern expression faltered slightly upon seeing your tearstained face.
The cloak rose up, whacking another side of Stephen’s head and the sorcerer hissed under his breath, “I’m going to set you on fire, you oversized curtain, don’t test me.”
A small giggle bubbled past your lips and the cloak wiggled around your arm as if pleased.
The man in front of you sighed, weary, but a few sparks danced between his fingers and a cloth was suddenly in his hand. His arm lifted slowly before he gently dabbed the soft material against your damp cheek. He didn’t say a word, focusing intently on the task at hand, and you felt somehow more ashamed. A sorcerer should never allow their emotions to rule them so easily. But you did.
“I’m sorry.”
Faint, and embarrassed.
Stephen paused in his task, and that usually knowing stare of his was searching, now empty of the anger that was there moments ago. “I know you are,” he told you, a touch softer. “And I know that you will be ready for this sooner than you think. But I need you to promise me that you will not dab in things you are not ready for yet.”
“You did.”
His gaze was inscrutable when he finally spoke, “But you, cannot be lost.”
