Droidbuilders UK at manchester Megacon LIVE.
You'll notice we've posted a few articles recently about our pals in Droidbuilders UK - and there will soon be more as we're heading to their 2024 get together in just a few short weeks - and here's their video from Manchester Megacon LIVE where a number of rascally robots roamed the halls, much to the delight of the crowds. Over at the Droidbuilders website, Darren Poulson wrote about the event. Arrived late Friday afternoon for setup, I located the entrance to the backlot of the venue. Thankfully I had done some investigation the night before on where to go, and the event organiser then sent some details through anyway. Venue staff were all friendly and super helpful which made it a whole lot easier. A quick unload of the gear and droids and a trek to the other side of the venue to find out area, and we put the stand together. Saturday morning and off to the event. 8am start for us, to be ready to entertain the early bird ticket holders at 9am. And then the fun started. A steady stream of people coming in the doors got to say Hi to R2 and other droids. It wasn’t the busiest event we’ve ever done, as there was another comic con on at the other side of Manchester which split the crowd. Tho a lot of people ended up doing both and splitting their days. Watch Droidbuilders UK at Bristol’s Mshed Museum 2024.
Droidbuilders UK returned to Bristol for their annual visit for Droids @ MShed, and as always it was a fun-packed and interesting event which they documented here. What a day!!! Cloudy with showers at first, but this didn’t stop people from coming down to see us again. We were packed out for the first few hours, then the sunshine came and we were able to expand outside, the MK Garrison did their job well (Jango Fett 😎) and got passers by attention. Dalek and Astromech’s ventured outside into the sunshine. Full event report: https://droidbuilders.uk/2024/07/16/swdb24-droids-bristols-mshed/ Total amont raised £684.00. A great fun day had by all [amazon box="B0D18PNXNL"]
Watch B2-EMO get a good workout.
He's getting ready to star in the second season of Andor and he's a superstar in his own right but like all good droids he needs a bit of TLC, so watch Lee Towersey put B2-EMO Buzz through his paces. B2-EMO getting it’s first MOT by the one and only Mr Lee Towersey!! The process includes a visual inspection, build questions, and testing functions, before a driving test run for droid dependence and operator competency. Both passed with flying colours 😎👍🏽 Fantha Tracks will be at Droid Builders UK once again this summer, so stay tuned for our coverage of this always engaging and fascinating event and be sure to grab issue 227 of Star Wars Insider magazine for our visit to the Creature Cantina at Pinewood Studios where we spoke with Neal Scanlan, Lee Towersey and more. It arrives 20th August. [amazon box="B0D1DHYFYR"]
In 2019, while at the Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, I stumbled upon the droid builder's exhibit by accident. I was so awed by all the droids and how well made they were. Some of them were even mobile, which at the time I had never seen. After walking through the exhibit and geeking out over all the cute droids, I found an information booth. It turned out that this club shared their knowledge about how to build the different types of droids in an acessible and understandable way. It was that day, at that booth, that I realized a novice roboticist like me could build a star wars droid.
I was most impressed with the BB-8 that I saw rolling around and felt immediately inspired. I just had to make a rolling droid, but if I was honest with myself, I am more partial to the darkside in the Star Wars universe. Thankfully for me, TLJ had introduced BB-8's evil cousin BB-9E, and the club had information on building this darker BB unit.
While roaming around the droid builder's exhibit I had seen multiple BB-8's, R2's, and MSE droids. Most of them were true to what was seen in the movie, but others were customized. The builders made original versions of the well know droids by mixing up the color schemes or adding unique features. Knowing that this was allowed sparked my inspiration even more.
After letting my imagination run crazy I had an idea. General Hux is my favorite character from the Star Wars sequel films. I spent a great deal of my time at the convention buying all the Hux merch I could and getting pictures with the Hux cosplayers. I would build a custom BB unit for Hux! Perhaps the BB-9E from TLJ was rewarded for discovering the resistance on the ship and was given upgrades to be Hux's personal droid. Or maybe Hux used his engineering skills to build himself a droid for companionship or to help him with his work. Either way, the idea of BB-9HX was born.
Our home project is now at a milestone. The parts to the body frame are printed. Hopefully by Xmas I will have a skeleton! . . #droidbuilders #chopperdroid #3dprinting #cr10spro #brassrootsleather (at Saint Cloud, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4jSLppDaca/?igshid=1foqq3hd0h228
