Drosophila quinaria

A species group of mushroom-eating flies from eastern North America. The ancestor of Quinaria species and related flies likely switched from a generalist ecology to become exclusively mushroom-feeders. Understanding the evolutionary forces that promoted a mushroom-feeding lifestyle, or reversion back to a more generalist ecology, can help understand concepts such as speciation and genetics of adaptation.

Ever notice how fruit flies often seem to appear from thin air? The truth is, they probably were there all along! Fruit fly eggs are so small, they can't be seen with the naked eye-- less than 0.5 mm (0.02 inches) in length!

Fruit flies have been used extensively in many different fields of research because they're easy to breed and take care of. Because of this, we now have extensive video documentation of their development process, from the moment their eggs is laid right up until it hatches!

Found today a beautiful fruit fly of subfamily Steganinae: Gitona Distigma (ID by carnivex on inat). It has a beautiful pseudopupils, but only if there was a good source of light on photo, otherwise they look normal and redish. Another distinctive feature: one pair of large and one small dots at the ends of the wings.

Fun fact: Fruit flies of the species D. bifurcata have the longest sperm cells of any organism on Earth at a whopping 6 cm (2.4 in) in length!!
