Young children were used as drummers during the civil war. Their life expectancy was very low, and since instructors had little time to teach them how to properly read music, they learned by ear. This is why drum rudiments have strange names such as paradiddle, and pataflafla. Rudiments sound like they are played. More cool drum information on my website.
Louis Bellson. This guy was actually the first drummer to use double bass drums in 1939.

decent even through changing heads and good tuning...or getting the best tuning out of shitty heads is to hit HARD, HIT the fuck out of those drums to make it sound less bad!!!!
